Preventive Maintenance IV: Air Filter As An Important Part Of Your Vehicle’s Com by Lazyreporta(m): 7:55pm On Apr 10, 2016
The automotive air filter is a device composed of fibrous materials which removes solid particles such as dust, pollen, mold and bacteria from the air that gets into the engine. It is that part of the engine that allows for the intake of a fair amount of clean air which reacts with the fuel component of the engine to produce a combustible mixture.
Air usually contains a lot of floating dust and grit. The grit and dust can cause serious damage if allowed into the engine. To prevent this, the air filter is mounted at the entrance of the fuel injection system or carburetor.
Apart from trapping dust and grit during air intake, the air filter also muffles the noise of the intake of air into the fuel injection system and manifold. This noise would be noticeable in the absence of the air filter. In addition to these functions, the air filter also acts as a frame arrester in case the engine backfires through the intake manifold.
It is therefore important to always check the quality of the air filter when performing scheduled preventive maintenance, because all air entering the engine through the fuel injection system or carburetor must pass through the air filter. To this end, it is recommended that you change the air filter every 15, 000 miles (aprox. 24,135km), or once a year.

With genuine air filter, air is allowed to flow freely into the engine, while dust and grit, which are harmful, are separated from the air. When this is done, your vehicle benefits from an efficient combustion of air-fuel mixture, resulting in high fuel economy and lower rate of wear and tear.
We must stress here that given the nature of our roads which are usually very dusty, it is important to pay a lot of attention to the condition of the air filter and strike a fair balance in the frequency with which we change the air filter.
NB: Your car’s air filter should be replaced when it gets dusty or dirty enough. Don’t let a mechanic convince you to replace it too frequently.
Replacing the air filter too frequently won’t harm your vehicle, but it will be felt in your wallet. On the other hand, not replacing the filter at all can lead to severe engine damage. The filter’s job is to keep dirt, dust and debris from entering the engine’s cylinders, allowing for optimal performance.
Swift Autocare Mobile Service recommends the use of FRAM® automotive air filters. By using the latest OE technologies, FRAM® offers its aftermarket clients the highest performance filters. In addition, thanks to constant value analysis, FRAM® is able to produce increasingly compact and lightweight filters thereby reducing the amount of recycling which helps to protect the environment.
