Clinical pathology covers an extensive range of laboratory functions that is concerned with the diagnosis and prevention of disease. It is a medical field that includes the laboratory analysis of body fluids.

WHAT ARE BODY FLUIDS?

Body fluids are liquid substances secreted in the body system. Common body fluids that are analysed in the laboratory to enhance accurate diagnosis include blood, urine, sweat, synovial fluid, semen, pleural fluid, pericardial fluid and peritoneal fluid.
Some samples are obtained through phlebotomy i.e. piercing into the vein with a needle, passing urine into a recommended container or through surgical manoeuvres as seen in the case of spinal or chest fluid collection. Body fluids must be collected in specified and recommended containers.

For certain body fluids from the chest, the heart and the abdomen, it is important to examine through testing whether the fluid is a transudate or an exudate. It helps diagnose disease accurately.
