KHUN SA, NET WORTH: $5 BILLION

Khun Sa was a Burmese drug lord who had a role in the opium and heroin trade. In addition, Khun Sa, who was born as Chang Chi-Fu, was leader of both the Shan United Army and the Mong Tai Army. As a young man, he trained during the Chinese Civil War and formed an army of his own, which consisted of a few hundred soldiers. He eventually got involved in the drug trade and was largely responsible for much of the heroin on the streets of New York from the mid 1970s all the way through the early 1990s.
Many perceived Khun Sa as one of the most ruthless drug lords during the height of his dominance. Before his rise as a drug lord, he was a fighter with the Chinese and even had weapons of mass destruction at his disposal for a brief time. In the 1960s, he worked with others in the opium trade in an area known as “the golden triangle.” This area was where most of the drug trade in Burma, Laos, and Thailand was taking place. Less than two decades later, he was heading up more than half of the triangle’s opium trade, which was also being made into heroin. While he tried hard to balance both his control of the soldiers and his drug-trading endeavors, he caught the attention of New York drug enforcement agencies.
The U.S. government put a $2 million bond on Khun Sa’s head, but he did not see his dealing in the drug trade as a bad thing. In fact, he argued that his business was helping those in Burma to feed their families. He claimed he was helping to fight the oppression of the Shan people, but the drug issue in America had become so bad that he was one of the most wanted men of his time. But instead of being indicted and arrested on drug charges, he chose to surrender and agree to a peace deal in 1996 in the capital of Burma, and he then went deep into hiding. This left the United States with few options, and he was never officially detained. In fact, Khun Sa remained in hiding until his death in 2007.
Kuhn Sa will always be remembered as one of the most ruthless drug lords of all time. Upon his death, rumors swirled about whether or not he died in absolute poverty and isolation or surrounded by opulence and riches. Because he went so deep into hiding, much about his later years is unknown. He had at least eight children, five sons and three daughters, but some claim he had as many as 30 offspring. The modern-day opium trade originating from the “golden triangle” has been reduced from a staggering 75% to approximately 5% today. No one can be certain if Kuhn Sa’s death is related to this statistic, but many feel that his role as a leader in the drug trade was essential in keeping that number so high for so long.

THE OCHOA BROTHERS, NET WORTH: $6 BILLION

Another unseemly family story, the three Ochoa brothers began trafficking drugs in 1977 when they had their boss executed to take over cocaine exports. Together, they earned a profit of $6 billion.

As we know Columbia is a big country in drug dealing. Let's take a look at who the richest Colombian drug lord is. Three brothers, Jorge, Juan and Fabio, who were from the upper middle class and well educated, too, were all in the line of drug selling and made a huge fortune up to $6 billion. They are known for their special team work to make revenue. They were arrested in 1991 and were out of prison in 1996. In 1999, the youngest brother was arrested again and sentenced to jail for 30 years.

PABLO ESCOBAR, NET WORTH: $30 BILLION

Notoriously violent, powerful and ruthless, Pablo Escobar ruled the Colombian cocaine trade for two decades, until his death in a rooftop shootout in December 1993. His nefarious enterprise brought him a level of wealth that had him listed in the top ten richest men in the world in the mid-1980s. Possibly one of the most famous names in criminal history, Escobar remains to this day a cult figure to some Colombians, particularly in the slums of Medellin, his city of birth.
Born Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria in Medellin, Colombia, to middle-class parents. His elder brother, Roberto, reported him as a good brother, who was kind, friendly and intelligent and someone who would achieve greatness. The young Escobar was driven and dreamed of becoming the president of Colombia. His drive unfortunately began to find the wrong outlets and he was soon involved in small-time hustling with his gang in the streets of Medellin.

There exist unfounded rumours that, whilst still at school, Escobar would steal tombstones from the local graveyards, sandblast off the names and sell them to Panamanian smugglers. He did not drink much besides beer and did not smoke cigarettes, although he developed a liking for the strong Colombian cannabis, a habit he indulged until his death. Doing whatever he could to make money, by the age of 20, Escobar was dealing cannabis, skilled at stealing cars and starting to build a name for himself in the Colombian criminal underworld.

It was in the early 1970s that he entered the cocaine trade and began buying high-grade coca paste from Bolivia and Peru. He processed it into cocaine, which he transported to America for distribution. Escobar’s drug business began to grow and, requiring a greater workforce, he decided to collaborate with other criminal groups in the area and together they formed the Medellin Cartel. When the well-known Medellin drug dealer, Fabio Restrepo, was murdered in 1975, Escobar became head of the Medellin Cartel and his brother, Roberto, handled the accounts. It was believed that Escobar had arranged for Restrepo’s murder for this very end.

Escobar seemed to have a preference for young girls and at age 26 he fell in love with a 15-year-old, Maria Victoria Henao Vellejo. In order to marry in 1976, they had to seek approval from the local bishop. The couple had two children, Juan Pablo and Manuela. Whilst they remained married until Escobar’s demise, he was known to have constant affairs, most frequently with underage girls.

He always did exactly as he pleased and would, more often than not, kill anyone who dared oppose him. In this way, Escobar’s power grew and he was associated with many kidnaps and assassinations over the years. He also had an affable side and due to his growing wealth and influence, enjoyed a certain amount of public popularity and political standing. In 1982 Escobar was elected as a deputy representative to the Chamber of Representatives of Colombia’s Congress, as part of the Colombian Liberal Party. He went on to sponsor various charities and football clubs in the Medellin area.

Referred to by his brother, Roberto, as a modern day Robin Hood, Escobar often paid for low-cost housing and other community necessities for the poor people of his neighbourhood. It was apparently a meticulously built image that Escobar promoted in his own newspaper and which ensured his protection by many Medellin citizens.

Escobar built his drug trafficking industry to such an extent that he eventually controlled over 80% of the cocaine sent to America. With his own factories and an entire fleet of aeroplanes and ships, including two radio-controlled submarines, it has been estimated that Escobar smuggled 70 to 80 tonnes of cocaine from Colombia to America per month, and as much as 11 tonnes in each flight. In order to launder the drug money, the Medellin Cartel controlled a large amount of crooked white-collar workers, such as bankers, lawyers and extended family.

JOAQUIN LOERA AKA CHAPO GUZMAN, NET WORTH: $1 BILLION

Loera was considered the most powerful drug trafficker in the world by the United States Department of Treasury. He was the leader of the most powerful cartel in the world today; the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico.

Each year from 2009 to 2011 Forbes magazine ranked Guzmán as one of the most powerful people in the world, ranking 41st, 60th, and 55th respectively. He was thus the second most powerful man in Mexico, after Carlos Slim. He was named as the 10th richest man in Mexico (1,140th in the world) in 2011, with a net worth of roughly US$1 billion. The magazine also calls him the "biggest drug lord of all time",and the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) estimates he has surpassed the influence and reach of Pablo Escobar, and now considers him "the godfather of the drug world". In 2013, the Chicago Crime Commission named Guzmán "Public Enemy Number One" for the influence of his criminal network in Chicago, though there is no evidence that Guzmán has ever been in that city. The last person to receive such notoriety was Al Capone in 1930.

Guzmán's Sinaloa Cartel transports multi-ton cocaine shipments from Colombia through Mexico to the United States, the world's top consumer, and has distribution cells throughout the U.S. The organization has also been involved in the production, smuggling and distribution of Mexican methamphetamine, marijuana, ecstasy (MDMA)and heroin across both North America and Europe. By the time of his 2014 arrest, Guzmán had exported more drugs to the United States than anyone else: more than 500 tons (450,000 kg) of cocaine in the U.S. alone.

Guzmán was captured in 1993 in Guatemala, extradited and sentenced to 20 years in prison in Mexico for murder and drug trafficking. After bribing prison guards, he was able to escape from a federal maximum-security prison in 2001. He was wanted by the governments of Mexico and the United States, and by INTERPOL. The U.S. offered a US$5 million reward for information leading to his capture, and the Mexican government offered a reward of 60 million pesos (approximately US$3.8 million) for information on Guzmán.

Guzmán was arrested by Mexican authorities in Mexico on 22 February 2014. He was found inside his fourth-floor condominium in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, and was captured without any gunshots being fired. Guzmán escaped from prison again on 11 July 2015 by exiting through a tunnel that led to a nearby construction site. He was recaptured by Mexican marines following a shootout on 8 January 2016.
