World Bank Raises 2016 Oil Price Forecast To $41 Per Barrel by simtosul: 6:31am On Apr 27, 2016
Fresh hope of a quicker recovery is on the horizon for cash-strapped Nigeria as the World Bank has raised its 2016 oil price forecast up from the previous level of $37 per barrel to a new height of $41.

The crude oil price at the international market according to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) data yesterday was between $43 and $44 per barrel.

Despite the country’s diversification efforts, crude oil remains the major income earner for the country with the sub-nationals heavily depending on revenue from oil sales at the monthly Federation Accounts and Allocation Committee (FAAC) to fund their activities now reeling in pains since last year when oil prices took a downward plunge as low as $25 per barrel. This followed global slow growth when Nigeria’s 2016 budget benchmark price estimate was fixed at $38 per barrel.

However, the World Bank yesterday said crude oil market rebounded to $40 per barrel in April following production disruptions in Iraq and Nigeria and a decline in non-Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) production, mainly U.S. shale.

A proposed production freeze by major producers failed to materialise at a meeting in mid-April.

The World Bank explained that the review of the forecast followed improving market sentiment and a weakening dollar, declaring that its new 2016 forecast for crude oil prices is now $41 per barrel from $37 per barrel, pointing out that Commodity Markets Outlook, as an oversupply in markets, is expected to recede.

“We expect slightly higher prices for energy commodities over the course of the year as markets rebalance after a period of oversupply,” said John Baffes, Senior Economist and lead author of the Commodities Markets Outlook.

“Still, energy prices could fall further if OPEC increases production significantly and non-OPEC production does not fall as fast as expected.”

All main commodity indexes tracked by the World Bank are expected to decline in 2016 from the year before due to persistently elevated supplies, and in the case of industrial commodities – which include energy, metals, and agricultural raw materials – weak growth prospects in emerging market and developing economies.

Energy prices, including oil, natural gas and coal, are due to fall 19.3 per cent in 2016 from the previous year, a more gradual drop than the 24.7 per cent slide forecast in January.

Non-energy commodities, such as metals and minerals, agriculture, and fertilizers, are due to decline 5.1 per cent this year, a downward revision from the 3.7 per cent drop forecast in January.

So, where are the critics who told us that the $38 crude oil benchmark for the 2016 budget is unrealistic?

You mean the Pseudo Economist cum evil minded fellows? Have no fear, they will soon crawl out of their holes to spew the usual "Rants from a Traumatized soul"

Some even rejoiced when some "analysts" predicted sub 20$.....

Hopefully, this won't make the government diversification plan a nullity, they shouldn't get lazy, the journey is long & treacherous!!

One other thing is that this increase will come with the usual problem ; imported refined products price will increase as well!!!

Double edged sword indeed!! smiley

Because?

Like I said on another thread, you people don't yet seem ready to accept a more progressive agenda. You're opposed to truly progressive ideals, yet expect miracles.

I'm sure this news is like a dagger pierced right through your heart! How could a revered institution like the world bank see light on the horizon for Nigeria in a Buhari regime? That's what you're thinking, yeah?

Na unna go tire!

Sis have we enjoyed the reduction in refined products?

Even wen it was down to about 40 usd or so then, we were supposed to be buying at a lower price around 60 naira or 54naira instead it was plunge to 86 naira.
So, if crude eventually goes up and refined product got hiked, there is no difference

Ok. Good. We'll see what becomes of it.
Though, Nigeria has been shown to suffer from a "resource curse" which is the abundance of natural resources which fuels official corruption resulting in a violent competition for the resource by the citizens of the nation.

Research by the World Bank has shown that the percentage of energy revenues from exports which goes to the government benefits only 1% of the population. Just 1%.

Imagine what Nigeria could have achieved by now without corruption.

I saw somewhere that Nigeria has lots of mineral resources in the Northern part of the country which remain unexplored. If we could go into mining of these minerals, another source of revenue would be created.

My friend, what has production been this year as against the benchmark?

People made unrealistic projections and you are standing up in defence. There is a reason it was called unrealistic, not because an average of $38 isn't achievable but because considering current realities the projected revenue is largely wishful thinking.

We criticize based on the bigger picture and the macroeconomy, rather than on specific price of crude.

Why why why importing wasting our forex and subsidies payment, this is why PDP failed.
