For most Nigerians, English is not a mother tongue; but it is an official language for all. It is a language of wider communication among people who don't speak the same language. So, for now, everyone must learn to use English.

On Nairaland, we communicate mostly in English and many people make mistakes. I think we can tap from the knowledge of graduates of English on this forum to perfect our written English. Let us bring errors to this thread and correct them. Tutors must explain issues and provide back up evidence to support their claims.

Please, this is not to ridicule anyone; but to improve our performance in the language. It is also not an avenue for padding our ego. Let the tutor teach and the learner learn without rancour.

Let's start with concord: Subject - verb concord. The basic rule is that singular subjects go with singular verbs while plural subjects will take plural verbs. But problems ensue in some cases that are not straightforward.

1. Everyone likes school.
2. Measles is dangerous.
3. Rice and beans is my favourite food.
4. Lawmans and Company is a reputable firm.
The subjects in these examples are singular, the verbs are, therefore, singular.
