If you graduated from First Grade University (U.I etal) with a first class, you may actually secure admission for PHD directly in UK and canada and some other countries as well. I will advise you to accept the offer, your supervisor believes you can cope and they surely have experience with Nigerians before. They know we are usually brilliant people!. especially having been able to come out with First Class with little facility!. But, Please, you have to work hard and don't break the bridge for other Nigerians coming after you. 1 Like |

Don't get frightened about foreign education. I can assure that if you did well in Nigeria education up to degree level, you will find it a lot easier overseas and I am speaking from my own personal experience. 1 Like |

virtually all graduate studies in Canada especially in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) comes with Research Assistance (RA) and you will also be eligible to get Teaching Assistant (TA). These two sources of funding should cover your tuition and living expenses and you should have like $200-$400 extra depending on the city you live in. You are also eligible to work 20hrs per week outside the University. lexyril: |

as a past grad student from a Canadian university here is my advise. accept the offer as PhD is usually 5 yrs staring from bachelor and it combine 1.5-2 yr masters and 3 yr Phd. essentially you will be spending 5 yrs however if you see after 2 yrs you want to stop at MSc you can discuss with your prof and let him know you can't continue for whatever reason and would like to just get the MSc. Many Mastes student i was classmates with always went ahead and did a PhD for me I stopped at Masters. 2 Likes |

Team16: 1. It is NOT about your qualifications; it is about his INTERESTS. Since he will pay for part of your education(maintaining you as RA) from his research grants, he is looking for something in return. As a PhD student, you are MORE likely to get him papers than a masters student. Besides, if you do well, you will also write a thesis which counts for something. So primarily, it is more about his interests than your qualifications. My take is if you decline the offer for PhD, he would likely drop your file. Nothing to gain, since after two years of masters, you will be gone. 2. A degree in Industrial Chemistry is sufficient to embark on PhD in Chemical Engineering especially if you have taken courses that major on different Unit Operations. So your PDG is a further confirmation that your background is sufficient. The nature of PhD is such that you don't know what your research would lead to and the knowledge require to complete it might even be far from what you have learnt. You might design something that requires a physicist to examine, a microbiologist to experiment with or a computational chemist to validate. A high quality PhD work often involves elements of collaboration and that's why many published works include as many as seven authors. So, don't be afraid of what lies in the program. 3.Generally in your first year, you will take classes that are relevant to your areas of interest. Often, you take these classes in consultation with your advisor. So, you will be fine. 4.You need to do your homework before leaving Nigeria for Canada. Examine his group. How many people are currently in his group? When folks graduate, where do most of the people in his group usually go? Where do people in his group usually get published? What is the average number of years it takes to get PhD in his group? If he is an emeritus professor as you have mentioned in one of your posts, you want to know if a Post Doc is running his group, if he still comes to school regularly? Those are the questions you need to examine carefully. 5.International students are often carried away by big names. You can't blame them. But the best folks to work with are the ASSISTANT PROFESSORS. They are working assiduously to get tenured and as such are more inclined to publish any of your works. Therefore, you tend to have more publications with Assistant Professors fighting to get tenure. In addition, you see them in lab, offices everyday including weekends. So, you tend to learn more on how to troubleshoot equipment, design, or even synthesize clusters in some cases. But they can be micromanaging too much. However, if you work with a well known professor, there is no motivation to publish your works except it will get into a top quality journal and some of them are sitting on many papers written by students who graduated almost a DECADE ago! So you want to weigh that carefully. 6. PhD in the west especially in engineering and sciences is not a joke. It is rigorous and there will be moments that you would be down, moment that would absolutely love it. Make friends, attend conferences and enjoy! My question for you is why Canada? Is the school well ranked in Chemical Engineering? 14 Likes 1 Share |

As someone who lives in Canada and also have a husband who has a PhD from a Canadian university I would advise you take the phd offer. Firstly your first two years studying for the PhD degree would require you to take some courses at Master degree level as sometimes Bachelor degree courses. This will help prepare you for the PhD research work. You would also need to pass your comprehensive exam which are courses at Master and Bachelor degree level so you really don't have anything to lose. I believe you could also ask to have some Master courses taken if you further wish to strengthen your knowledge at the end you complete your program in 4 to 5 years rather than the 6 to 8 years if you go for a Masters degree first. I hope this helps 2 Likes |

mrking3: have you heard about M.Phil/Ph.D? sometimes a very good first degree cgpa can earn a M.Phil/Ph.D admission. such candidate will offer courses for M.Phil, and if he/she makes Ph.D grade at the end of first year or thereabout, he continues automatically with the PH.D programme in the remaining three years |

ogechieku: Don't be deceived, Nigeria's capacity to do meaningful research in Science and Engineering doesn't exist. It is as simple as that. If you are studying for PhD in any science or engineering related discipline in Nigeria, you are just wasting your time. 5 Likes |

Well... If you dont want a PhD... but MSc... Do Msc and take your exit. One thing is... Not all PhD holders will teach a you can be a full time researcher or an industrial consultant at the same time. There is no rule that says you must do msc before PhD. In most PhD cases, you have ur msc curriculum integrated into it already. anyways... its your choice.. I advice you take it.. but you are good to make ur own decision. from experience, I can bet u will figure it out when you get there. Funny comments on msc,and Nysc I must say... but anyways goodluck. |

ogechieku: From 1960 till roughly 1985, Nigeria's education system was modestly decent. However, the oil crises of early 80s plus the post-Babangida SAP years essentially underfunded the sector and rendered it prostrate. Many Nigerian professors who got their first degree and PhDs from Nigeria that are lecturing overseas are often from that period, 1960-1985. Those are the golden era. However, how would a chemistry PhD, for instance, from Nigeria of today who has never SEEN not to talk of using such instruments as basic as SQUID, NMR Spectrometer, Xray Diffractometer, Mass Spectrometers etc be able to teach undergraduates in western countries who use these instruments on daily basis? The core of science and engineering training is "hands on" experience in designing and synthesizing especially at PhD level. How can they give what they don't have? 5 Likes 1 Share |

Go for the PhD. Its not like Nigeria where most PhD are lecturers. In advanced countries PhD holders often work in industry and advance knowledge and practice of industry. Msc is the course work portion of a PhD program. |

Re: I Applied For MSc But Foreign Supervisor Said School Is Accepting Me For PhD by bigtt76(f): 12:38am On May 05, 2016 |
You are not skipping MSc but rather combining both so what happens at the end is that instead of graduating with MSc, you get PhD. This does not mean you cannot leave after the completion of course work equivalent to an MSc degree. I guess you applied to a UK university right? Their system is like that even on the MSc level, if you cannot finish up, you still get a diploma certificate to the level of course work you completed successfully. Team16: 1 Like |

mrking3:Have you ever done MSc or you're writing what you heard or read somewhere? Which public University (apart from UI) runs MSc within 1 year, 6 months? I just finished my MSc in lautech and I spent 2 years and some months. So of my colleagues are still battling with their projects. OP, I'll advise you to accept the offer. If you need more clarification, you can walk up to lecturers in your dept. They're in the best position to tell you what to do. |

My advice to you if you will like to be in academics is to do your MSc first then PhD. Every steps of education has its own recognition if you want to be a teacher, even during promotion MSc has its own position. If you want to be a professional then no problem go for your PhD direct |
