Losing weight is something that the majority of us look to do at one point or another. Apart from practicing a sport, a very important aspect for weight loss is the diet -- you are what you eat. If you want to lose some of those extra pounds by dieting, concealed calories and appetite enhancers are the 2 nastiest – and easiest-to-miss – enemies you can encounter. To help you out, we put together a list of the top 11 unexpected foods & drinks to avoid while dieting.

The Science Behind Weight Loss
Losing weight usually means a total change of lifestyle for most of us – eating habits, taking up a more active lifestyle – and maintaining them for a long period of time. This seems like a pretty difficult thing, especially since science warns against crash diets and other such presto! solutions – hey, nobody said it was gonna be that easy –, but it actually goes rather smoothly once you grasp the basics of weight loss science.

Get The Balance
First off, it’s not a good idea to skip meals or starve yourself. Experts agree that doing so only leads to binge eating and, eventually, weight gain. The secret is balance – burn off more calories than you ingest through equilibrated, healthy eating and sports.

Portion Control
Small portions of food eaten often keeps your metabolism going, which ultimately means that you don’t store fat so quickly. In opposition, eating large portions at once – especially if you’re saving your meal for the latter part of the day e.g.: the evening or late at night – means your body will most likely store the excess energy as fat. Whatever and whenever you eat, always remember the golden rule: if they calories can’t be used, they will be stored!

Misleading Labels
One of the biggest traps you can fall while dieting is taking a “low-fat” label as an indicator that that product is diet-friendly. Foods or drinks that are tagged “low-sugar” or “low-fat” can still have a high-calorie content; labels like these tend to be very misleading. To avoid falling in this trap, remember to always check the saturated fat and calorie content of the product. Don’t let yourself be misguided by these labels.
To get a head start on your lifestyle improvement program, remember the short tips listed above and, very importantly, cut out these 11 foods and drinks that could impact your diet in a negative way.

1. White Rice
Lacking husk, your body digests white rice very easily. In science talk, your body breaks it down into glucose and you get a sudden spike in blood sugar levels; excess glucose is created in this way and it ends up being stored by the body as fat – big no-no. Furtherly, after the digestion process is over, your blood sugar levels crash suddenly. This leads to a craving for sugary foods – another big no-no because your body is asking you to help it level out its blood sugar levels. If you want to include rice in your diet, make sure you go for brown rice instead: the digestion is much more gradual and it gives your body so-called “slow burning energy”, which reduces your cravings – big yes!

2. Spirits
We all know that wines and beers contain huge levels of sugar. However, people commonly think that there’s no problem to drink spirits whilst dieting – they contain few calories and virtually no fat, so what’s the problem with sipping on some gin tonic or some scotch every now and then? Well, here’s the deal – your body burns through alcohol before burning through any kind of fat, so until your system is rid of any leftover spirits, you won’t burn any fat at all, as expert dietician Robert Atkins reported. Not to mention that if you get drunk, you’ll have hangover-hunger the next morning, and that means a wrap for all your weight loss plans.

3. Red meat
When you’re on a diet, protein is an ideal filler – it allows your body to bypass all those dreaded carbs and fats during meals and it also ensures that you have all the elements you need to develop muscles while you exercise. The greatest source of protein is meat. But you have to watch out for red meats – beef, pork, lamb –, because they have high levels of saturated fats. These are responsible for boosting your fat levels and for creating really nasty health issues – heart conditions and artery blockage, to name a few. You should opt for lean meats – fish, chicken, prawn –, seeing how they’re healthy and rich in protein.

4. Fruit Juice
Common belief is that fruit juice is a great aid for hydration and unfortunately, that isn't so -- at least not at the amount most people drink. Fruit juice has a high sugar content that ends up outweighing any dietary benefits. Just picture this – one small glass of orange juice can contain the combined sugar of up to eight squeezed oranges. It’s pretty clear why these refreshing drinks aren’t all that diet-friendly -- It's super easy to drink more than you'd need. Eating the fruits themselves is a much-preferred way to get all your nutrients without the unnecessary sugar boost.

5. Diet soda
It is needless to say, of course, that full-sugar soda and fizzy drinks are a bad diet option. However, their so-called “diet” counterparts are just as bad – studies show that the artificial sweeteners present in these drinks lead to weight gain because they increase your appetite. If you want your diet to be a successful one, stay away from these drinks completely.

6.Grapes
That’s right, grapes. Although they’re good in small amounts, the high levels of sugar in grapes often trigger cravings for other sweet treats. Be careful to consume them only alongside slow-burning, complex carbohydrates.

7. Protein Bars
When you’re at work or out on the town and don’t have time to fit taking lunch in your busy schedule, protein bars sound like a great alternative. You wouldn’t be wrong in assuming this – some of them are. However, make sure to check the nutritional label for the calorie and protein content and only go for those with high levels of protein and low calories – some of the protein bars out there can be just as bad as a candy bar.

8. Salted Nuts
These are one of the most dangerous snacks out there for you as a dieter. Even though nuts are a good, rich source of proteins, what makes this treat so sinful is the salt – it addicts you up to the point where you can’t stop pinching them from the bag. If you’re not careful, you can exceed your recommended daily intake of calories by eating just one bag of nuts!

9. Ketchup
A tomato-based sauce sounds pretty harmless. Well, it’s not, not for a dieter, anyway. It contains high levels of salt and sugar that can turn a healthy meal into a very unhealthy one. You should avoid ketchup entirely. If you’re doing your diet right, you won’t need it for anything anyway – especially not French fries!

10. Peanut butter
This tasty treat is a great source for monounsaturated fats, which are less likely to be stored as body fat and also prevent heart disease – pretty neat. Still, confirming Murphy’s dreaded law about all good things being immoral, illegal, or fattening, peanut butter is filled with calories – a single tablespoon can contain up to 200 calories. Not to mention that some store-bought peanut butter has added sugars that top up this amount. So, when consuming it, make sure to buy it all-natural and to eat it in moderate amounts.

11. Cow’s Milk
Last, but not least, on our list is cows’ milk – particularly whole milk, that is responsible for raising your cholesterol levels and blocking your arteries due to its extremely high levels of saturated fats. This huge fat content makes whole milk one of the most calorie-packed products out there. The great and easy diet option you can make here is replacing whole milk with skim milk or soy milk. These “low-fat” milks are the way to go if you’re on a diet – they get you your protein, your calcium, and your vitamin D, without delivering the extra fat content.
