Uka Loses Post As Moderator Of Presbyterian Church Of Nigeria by Uniquexty(f): 9:48am On May 27, 2016 |
A Federal High Court sitting in
Abakaliki, yesterday sacked
Rev. Emele Mba Uka as the
Moderator of The General
Assembly of Presbyterian
Church of Nigeria (PCN).
The court presided over by
Justice Maureen Adaobi
Onyetenu, declared Rev Nzie
Eke as the duly elected
moderator. Justice Adaobi said
that Rev Eke was the most
qualified and was the only
candidate of the position and
thereby declared the purported
election of Rev Emele Uka null
and void.
The crises in the church started
in 2011 when the other synods
elected Rev Uka as the
moderator, a situation which
did not go down well with the
Mid East synod which claimed
that the election was in
contravention of the laws and
constitution of the church.
The situation got worse later
when the church sacked the
then Ebonyi State Deputy
Governor, Prof. Chigozie Ogbu,
and the state’s Commissioner
for Works, Dr. Paul Okorie.
Others suspended by the
church include: Elder C. Ewa,
Elder Jombo Ukoma, Mr.
Odicha Ude, Rev. Ibiam Ukeni,
Rev. Nwonu Eze, Rev.
Amarachi Ukoma, Rev. Michael
Ani, Rev. Aka Ibiam, Rev.
David Amaramo and Rev. Nzie
Eke.
Piqued by the attitude of the
church, the Mid East synod
declared its autonomy and took
the name Reformed
Presbyterian Church of Nigeria
with Rev. Nzie Eke as its
pioneer General Assembly
Moderator.The situation forced
the parent church to take the
new breakaway church to
court.
Ruling on the matter, Justice
Oyitenu held that the
deprivation of the Mid East
synod of the PCN the
opportunity to produce the
Moderator of the General
Assembly is in breach of the
policies, practices, procedures
and working documents of the
PCN.
The judge also held that the
defendants (RPCN) are entitled
to worship their God under any
name of their choice in line
with constitution of the
country, the 1999 constitution
(as amended).
On the issue of the property,
the court also held that the
property real and personal
belong to the parishioners and
worshipers of the Mid-East
synod and not that of the
plaintiff. 1 Like |
