There is apprehension and fear in Ota in Sango Ota, Ogun State. Albinos and hunchbacks may be at risk. There are allegations that an albino and/ or a hunchback are needed to perform some sacrifices before the kingmakers will announce the death of a prominent Oba in the area.Oba Moshood Adetoro Oyede, the Olota of Ota in Sango Ota, who was said to have ascended the throne in 1997, reportedly joined his ancestors on Wednesday, May 25.Allegations are however spreading like wildfire that the traditional institution required an albino or a person with a hunchback to perform some sacrifices before the death will be officially announced.Although news of the death is still discussed in hush-hush tones, online news platforms are awash with news of the passage. The development is presently causing panic in the town as albinos and hunchbacks have scampered to safety. In fact, there are allegations that if the traditional institution cannot easily lay hands on the needed ‘sacrifice’ that they can by some means summon an albino or the hunchback from wherever he is to the place of sacrifice. In many parts of the world, especially in East and Central African countries, albinos are frequently stigmatised, attacked and used for various rituals.Femi Ayodele, a resident of Sango Ota told Independent that the rumour of the ‘sacrifice’ has created tension and forcedpeople to close their shops and other business outfits earlier than usual, even as children are hardly seen playing in the streets.Ken Nwosu, a restaurant operator, whosecanteen is located around Love Bus-Stop,Iju via Ota road in Sango Ota, said he alsoheard rumours that the Oba had died. His words: If the rumour is true, then residents of Sango Ota and its environs are advised to return home early from their offices, business places, schools orsocial engagements, arguing that tradition is tradition, despite our modern life.Ayodele, a public relations consultant alleged that until a sacrifice in made in accordance with tradition, the death of the Oba may not be announced to members of the public.“The announcement, which could come at any time, could serve as a prelude to the commencement of the burial rites of the departed Oba”, he said. But, police authorities at Sango Ota Police Command denied knowledge of death of the Oba, even as they assured that the security architecture of Sango Ota and its environs is intact.According to a police source, the purported tension over the allege death of the Oba is the handiwork of unknown alarmists.“The police are effectively on ground in all parts of Ogun state,” the source boasted.Independent recalls that Oba Oyede ascended the throne of the Olota of Ota in 1997, following the passing of Oba Timothy Talabi Dada.Dada ruled Ota from 1954 to 1992, having taking over from Oba Timothy Fadina, who ruled from 1949 to 1954.

Lol. Old religion indeed. I just pity those poor guys whose lives are already hard enough as it is, to now be looking over their shoulder in fear any time they step out of their houses...
