WAWA Children’s Day Celebration: Ogwezzy-ndisika Advocates Gender Equality by tunnypop(m): 3:42pm On May 30, 2016

Ngozi Ogwezzy-Ndisika, Friday, has advocated gender equality among Nigerian Children, and encouraged girls to be given equal access to education in order to fully maximize of their potentials, at the maiden edition of West African Women Association’s (WAWA) Children’s Day Celebration.

Guest Speaker, Prof. Ngozi Ogwezzy-Ndisika, at WAWA’s Children Day CelebrationOgwezzy-Ndisika, said, some ladies work in ‘male dominated industries’, thereby, are called ‘names.’ The female folks should be able to get to the top, hence, claiming equal opportunity with the male folks.
The Head of Mass Communication Department, University of Lagos, Prof. Ngozi Ogwezzy-Ndisika, added, “Education helps to fine-tune you and sharpens your skill. Your choice of discipline as a female should not necessarily be nurse, teacher, rather, you should be able to break into other ground of disciplines.”

In her keynote address, The WAWA’s secretary and project coordinator, Mrs. Hauwa Sodeinde, said, the children’s day celebration was different from the normal celebrations staged at open places, stadia and receiving of salutations, rather, WAWA through the Sustainable Development Goals 3, 4, and 5, which are; quality education, good health and well-being, these put together bring about a complete child.
She added that, “as a child, you should stop complaining about the situation of your society, but start acting.

Focal Person WAWA, Dr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Ubeku, in her welcoming address, said, children are gift from God and should not be taken for granted. She, however, lamented with the way children are handled in many Africa countries. Hence, the need to come to the yearnings of the African child, the children have to be informed on the need for right living in the society, Ubeku added.

The wife of the former late presidential aspirants in Nigeria, Ubeku, said, “the children from various schools had participated in debate and essay competitions earlier, the best three schools would have their articles published in
ECOWAS/WAWA
’s publication and would be decorated at the World Children’s Day in November 20.”

Speaking on the Chibok School Girls, Ubeku stressed joy, said, it shows that the government is serious about bringing back the girls. “WAWA joins the government having seen its sincerity to bring back the girls. “WAWA urges every Nigerian to support government efforts.

that, the government is not trying to raise the hope of the Chibok School Girls parents, but to ensure that they are found and brought back.

Akwarandu believes the way forward in bringing back the remaining girls is to dislodge the Boko Haram, this will help in rescuing the adopted girls.
Other activities at the maiden children’s day celebration included health talk anchored by a medical practitioner,among other activities.

A popular Hollywood actress and human right activist, Mrs Folusho Daramola Salako, reignited the atmosphere when she stressed that, girl-child should place less emphasis on their ‘physical’, rather things that affect their lives positively should be encouraged.

The Nollywood star, said, “No matter how beautiful a girl is, if not intelligent, is just a beautiful fool.” Daramola charged the children to think of what they cannot see, and come out with something different to improve their society.

Some of the children who spoke with Newsmath, Oluyide, from Akoide School, said, she was happy representing her school. She learnt that the female child should not be victimized.

Edner Atopa from Harrobs College, said, she learnt that the female gender should be given equal opportunity as the male child is given. “I am happy my school emerged the winner in the competitions,” she added.

Tony Ifianyi, from Gulf Flower School, said that, “I like the Children’s day celebration. It is good for young stars. I find the actress inspirational and will like her to be my role model.”

Harrobs College emerged winner in the competitions while notable members of WAWA were decorated and given awards.
