To get started quickly in front-end development, you just need to start quickly. If you have no experience at all, then you’re going to want to land on your feet and start learning HTML and CSS immediately. These are the foundations of all websites. After you have a good understanding of these languages (and I’ll be honest, a “know a little about a lot” mindset will probably be good to start) you need to move on to JavaScript. JS is what makes your website exciting. Once you have a general hold on these three languages, you need to make sure you can go further in depth with them. You never want to stop learning. I used to try learning one new thing each day (now, I try for two or three things per week) and mastering it.

Your best friend here is going to be practice. Not only will practicing help you see what you’re code is turning into (think browser preview), but you will also be building projects that can be put into a portfolio (assuming you’re looking to get into the field to find a job).

Once you have a pretty good mastery of HTML/CSS/JS and are ready to go even further, you will want to look at Haml and Jade for HTML, Sass and Less for CSS and jQuery and Node.js for JS. These will really expand what you’re able to do. Next up would be frameworks, like Bootstrap or Foundations. These will help you build sites quicker, and with more uniformity.

Never despise the days of small beginning :-)
