Sleep is necessary to support human life. If the body is deprived of sleep, certain changes take place, such as, personality, disturbances and loss of coordination, and the ability to concentrate.

Regular periods of sleep refresh the whole body. Many body changes take place during sleep that are not fully understood. Breathing changes noticeably when a person goes to sleep; it slows down and becomes irregular.

Heart action slows as much as 10 – 25 beats, which lowers the blood pressure. The rate at which the body tissues use food for energy decreases.

When we are asleep, muscles lose much of their tone. Even the eye relax, turning upward and outward under the close eyelids.

During deep sleep, growth hormones are released into the blood, which is necessary for the growth and maintenance of a healthy body. In children, these hormones are needed for growth and repair. In adults, they function only to restore tissue.

After a good night’s sleep, a person feels a sense of wellbeing. The mind is alert, the muscles are relaxed, digestion functions properly, and appetite is healthy. Individuals vary in the amount of sleep they needs.

Regularity is more important than length of time. If you wake up in the morning refreshed and ready to go, undoubtedly you are getting enough sleep.
