EU Extends Ban On Beans Import From Nigeria By Three Years by Emekamex(m): 8:50am On Jun 10, 2016
The European Union has extended its ban on importation of dried beans from Nigeria by three years.
Dr Vincent Isegbe, the Coordinating Director, Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS), disclosed this Thursday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
It would be recalled that EU banned importation of Nigeria’s dried beans in June 2015 on ground that the produce contains high level of pesticide considered dangerous to human health.
Isegbe, however, lamented that the extension came when the Federal Government and its relevant agencies were working to ensure that the June dateline to lift the ban was met. The director quoted the official journal of the EU, of accusing Nigeria of not doing enough to lift the ban during the period of suspension.
“The continued presence of dichlorvos (pesticide) in dried beans imported from Nigeria and maximum residue levels of pesticides show that compliance with food law requirement as regards pesticide residual cannot be achieved in the short term.
“The duration of the importation prohibition should therefore be extended for an additional period of three years to allow Nigeria implement the appropriate risk-management measure and provide required guarantees.
“The measures provided for in this regulation are in accordance with the opinion of the standing committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed,” Isegbe further quoted the journal as saying.
He, however, said the extension should serve as opportunity for stakeholders to put their hands together to correct the mistake. Isegbe called for sensitisation of stakeholders, especially farmers to do the needful from the farming stage and ensure that this embarrassment do not repeat itself.

Just put a ban on dichlorvos (pesticide) in dried beans and people will buy your beans.

Will you accept to eat a meal with dichlorvos (pesticide) in it?

Go for the solution instead of getting stuck into a problem

The same beans whose ban was reported to have been lifted due to Buhari's foreign trips?
The authorities should do the right thing and Buhari wouldn't need to travel to negotiate beans export as our trade partners will buy naturally.

grin grin grin so na because of exportation of beans, dats why beans cost! Thank God say they Don bounce them back. With this positive development, beans that normally sell for #200 per derica before should henceforth sell for #100 or less.

We should retaliate like Russia by banning GMO foods and plants in Nigeria from Monsanto, GSK, Glasgow etc including apple imports from EU. Imperialists giving flimsy excuses.
How about we banning their apples with preservatives that we spend billions to import when we have guava, mango, orange, apricot and beautiful fruits here.
The EU is subsiding their farmers to produce beans and dont want cheaper beans from Nigeria yet they want us to devalue the Naira

EU will always find a reason to discourage the import of whatever is not coming from EU.
m not surprised at all.
they protect their local manufacturers even at the expense of unaffordability

This is an indication how careless our Health Managers are?

Imagine the unregulated amount of toxin Nigerians consume. The failure of Kidney, Liver and other diseases seems to be on the rise because our Food and Crop Inspectors are casual with their job.

Plus given the required time to meet the EU export specification, no tangible plan was set out to achieve this.

O God save us from those we entrust to secure our well being.

it is better to under go these bottlenecks now and get them right to enjoy later, than to enjoy now and suffer at the later end. bombing, banning, blocking etc.; will become history someday.
NIGERIA SHALL BE GREAT AGAIN.
