RESIDENTS of Ossissa community in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State have been thrown into mourning following the

killing of a 45-year-old renowned farmer by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen. The incident which happened on Thursday, is among other series of attacks on local farmers by herdsmen in recent times in the state. It was gathered that the victim, identified as Mr Nwadei Monday Ikechukwu, was returning home from his plantain farm when he was gun down.

The incident is now raising tension among local residents as all Fulani herdsmen had allegedly fled the area for safety. The Wife of the deceased, Mrs Prescilia Nwadei (née Egugbo) who was said to be nursing a two months old baby, was still in a coma following the ugly incident. A brother to the deceased, Mr Augustine Nwadie told our correspondent that his brother was on his way from the farm on Thursday morning when he was killed.

He said the matter had been reported to he police. Findings reveal that the people of the area and the herdsmen had been having a running battle over an alleged abduction of a lawyer and one other person in the locality.

A community source said, “A lawyer was kidnapped with another person by Fulani herdsmen and the deceased unfortunately passed through the kidnappers den and was killed, the Lawyer was driving a Jeep and after paying the ransom, he was freed.”

A political leader and first Majority Leader of the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Aneke Ifemeni, who confirmed the incident, expressed deep shock at the killing. The ex-lawmaker lamented, “Between Ossissa and Isselegu junction, I had encountered them when I was traveling to my village, Onicha-Ukwuani, they opened fire on me but, God saw me through.”

Wasn't it the Delta State governor who was saying the other day that it is unlawful to chase those miscreants out of Delta? Well, let him sit back and watch the dance of the masquerades unfold before his eyes.
