Bad Habits Kill

TEXT: ISAIAH 19:1-5

"And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards" (Isaiah 19:3)

Often, what makes people to persist in their reckless and indulgent lifestyle is the comfort they derive from their companions in the act. They refuse to see that they are in a slippery path, and are headed to a certain disaster. They would not listen to good reason nor accept wise counsel, choosing instead to draw mental strength from their notorious companions.

The Egyptians were like that. They had all become accustomed to their evil habits and lifestyle. They were incorrigible because of their renown wisdom and great achievements in the field of science. They, therefore, did not see any need for God in their affairs. Before God, they lived as outlaws. This was an assault on the Almighty, and He decided to sweep through the land of Egypt with His judgment. The idols in which they trusted shall be moved at the presence of God, and their hardened hearts would at last melt at the sight of the vengeance of The Lord. Their destruction shall come from within, for God shall set them against each other. Rather than give comfort, they would destroy themselves. At that time, the widely acknowledged spirit of Egypt shall fail them, as would all their idols, charmers, familiar spirits and wizards. They would be hit by natural disasters. They would find help from nowhere, and instead, they shall be governed by a cruel and fierce king, who would show them no mercy.

It is foolish to think that you can make do without God in this life. You may think that you have succeeded having escaped danger on numerous occasions or having benefited from God’s mercies. But evil lurks in the corner for all those who would not listen to the counsel of God to turn from their wicked ways. The thing to do is to retrace your steps from your sinful habits and receive Jesus Christ today as your Saviour and Lord.

Their Days Are Numbered!

TEXT: REVELATION 16:1-12

"And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues for pain" (Revelation 16:10)

Evil, with all that is contrary to the teachings of the Holy Bible, is on such ascendancy that a great number of people are doubting prophecy and becoming "scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation" (2 Peter 3:3,4).

There are people who believe that everything begins and ends here on earth. Standing on this logic, sinful man has conducted himself with impunity, enacting laws and erecting systems that challenge God and His servants. Thus, there are many abominable acts as same-sex marriage, bestiality (man beast intimacy), human sacrifices, senseless mass murders, rape, sacrilegious church worship, blasphemous interpretation of Bible doctrines and scores of other heinous violation of God's injunctions.

Yet, one thing is sure: God will intervene. At the time of the Great Tribulation, when the true Church would have been raptured, when the blood-redeemed believers would be in great joy in the Lord's presence in heaven, unbearable torment would be the lot of the wicked on earth (Revelation 16:10).

The world headquarters of the Satan-backed Antichrist and false prophet would be toppled (verse 10), as God rains His wrath of plagues on them and their followers. Their refusal to repent and honour God will be met with fierce angelic rage to prove the superiority of the Creator over mutinous creatures.

The days of this irreverent system are numbered and this knowledge should serve as a sober warning to the unbelieving to abandon their world of sin and darkness and embrace the light and righteousness of Jesus Christ.

Like Everyone Else

TEXT: 1 CHRONICLES 9:35-44

"And Ner begat Kish; and Kish begat Saul; and Saul begat Jonathan, and Malchishua, and Abinadab, and Eshbaal" (1 Chronicles 9:39)

The world has known so many great names whose lives and contributions stand out like colossus. The impact of their lives has cut across time and boarders. But one interesting thing is that all of them have something in common with every other person on earth. They were born like everyone else. There was nothing that suggested the greatness they were to attain at birth.

As we consider the mention of the name of Saul in our text today, we cannot but reflect on how ordinary his birth was. Nobody had the slightest idea of the greatness that was to become his as the first king in Israel. He was born like everybody else, lived like every other person until God picked him up and turned him to another man. Unfortunately however, he made a mess of the opportunity later in life as he went contrary to the God who chose him.

Here are the lessons there for us. We may not be able to tell what will become of the little lives we see around us each day, like our children and those we have the opportunity to influence. How we need to be careful in handling them and make sure we do not miss the privilege we have to give them our best! No doubt, the trainings we give them now, in one way or the other, prepares them for the future role they will have to play. Can we also see why abortion is a terrible crime? And why it is also not right to fail to give the right care or treatment to our children?

Again, Saul was so ordinary and unknown until God picked him up. It is true that the best in our lives can never be realized until we allow God to take us up. He is the One that can help us best to develop and make use of the gifts and potentials He has endowed us with because He is the One that puts them there. You cannot be at your optimum best until you let God have full control of your life.

Sincere Concern

TEXT: EZRA 10:1-5

"Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore" (Ezra 10:1)

Walter J. Chantry, editor of "Banner of Truth" Magazine, noted: "Our Good Shepherd has become the model for other shepherds. His great concern is the good of the sheep. A good shepherd gives himself to the sheep. Jesus our Lord made every personal claim subservient to the blessing of his flock; even to giving His life that they might live."

Our text reveals Ezra's power of prayer. He soaked himself in prayer, confessing, weeping and casting himself down before God. Many people gathered around him. They did not just come to see what had come over him, but they also wept aloud because they too were sad about the sins of the people. Many of them had forsaken the covenant which God made with them. They went ahead to marry strange women, contrary to the counsel of God.

Shechaniah, one of the men, was equally sad because of the sins of the people. Though he was not married to a strange wife, he was sorrowful because some of his relatives did. He, however, knew there was still hope for Israel, especially because God still loved His people. But the people needed to turn away from their sins if they wanted God to forgive them.

Therefore, Shechaniah suggested to Ezra that the Jewish men who had already married strange wives and had children should send them away. Shecaniah pledged that the people would support Ezra in his task. Ezra agreed with the proposal and made all the people to promise to send their foreign wives away, which they did.

In our present dispensation, once marriage has been contracted, there is no divorce till death. It behoves all believers to live within the frontiers of God's word. Unequal yoke in marriage or business is going against God's commandment. And anything that is contrary to God’s commandment is sin.

Israel’s Loss, Our Gain

TEXT: ROMANS 11:25-36

"For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles be come in" (Romans 11:25)

It is no accident that the world’s eye is turned towards the Middle East. This part of the world is important, not only for its oil, but also because it is the stage on which the final act of God's redemptive drama will be played out.

In today's passage, Paul summarized God's dealings with Israel and with the Gentiles. In order for God to facilitate bringing the gospel to the Gentiles, He had to deal with Israel corporately as enemies. They had rejected the message by His Son, and thus proved themselves His enemies even while they called Him their God. They actively opposed God by preventing people from hearing the gospel. Israel's corporate stumbling, which is temporary, is called a mystery. In the Scripture, a mystery is not a truth difficult to understand, but a truth previously unrevealed (and therefore unknown) which is now revealed and publicly proclaimed (Ephesians 3:9). When Christ returns at the end of the Great Tribulation, a remnant who have turned from their transgression unto God during the Great Tribulation will be saved.

The salvation of anyone is a matter of God's grace, not of their own merit and it will be the same for Israel. The salvation of anyone is because of God's kindness and favour.

When God turned His gospel toward all the nations of the world, many believed it and received the righteousness provided by grace. It is important to point out however, that as God rescinded Israel's relationship with Him as His chosen people, He will do the same to us if we do not "hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast unto the end" (Hebrews 3:14). This nullifies and sets aside the doctrine of eternal security which states that once you are saved, you are forever saved. Be constant in Christ therefore, and continue to the end.

Like A Flint

TEXT: GENESIS 39:7-23

"There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?" (Genesis 39:9)

Great leaders always exercise self-discipline. Unfortunately, our society seeks instant gratification rather than self-discipline. We want instant breakfast, fast food, quick cash from ATMs, fast cars and trains. But success doesn’t come instantly. As General Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “There are no victories at bargain prices”.

The favour of God and Joseph’s own integrity won him the admiration and trust of his master as our text reveals. He was made overseer of the entire household, a privileged position. Joseph had passed the test of adversity. If Satan cannot get us to sin by withholding our needs, he will try to offer what we desire. The test of adversity led to his master’s wife desiring an immoral relationship with him. Joseph resisted the temptation by fleeing the scene of temptation. Although he was wrongly accused by the temptress and later put in prison, he held his head high in honour and purity and kept his dream alive.

Adversity is both a test and temptation. God wants to build us up while Satan wants to tear us down. Joseph found himself in a very difficult situation. Everything conspired to make sin easy and resistance near impossible. He was a slave living in a society devoid of moral values.

Our greatest security against sin is to be shocked by it and call it what it is. How did Joseph pass the test of allurement? Others might regard it as a little fling but he called it what it was - “great wickedness” (Genesis 39:9). Sometimes, we do things we shouldn’t do. Consequently, God sends adversity to purify our motives, refine our dreams and prepare us to realize our visions. When you find yourself in a pit, tempted, maligned or misunderstood, allow it to make you better.

What Displeases God

TEXT: NUMBERS 11:1-9

"And when the people complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp" (Numbers 11:1)

We often erroneously think that God only frowns at those things we consider to be great sins, like murder, adultery, theft, among others. These are indeed serious offences before the Lord. But just as He frowns at them, so He does towards our everyday habits, like murmuring and complaining.

The Israelites came to this realization the hard way. While journeying through the wilderness on their way to the Promised Land, they began to complain about everything from the hardship in the course of the journey to their diet. God heard their murmuring and it displeased Him greatly. Their rebellious conduct so made Him angry that His judgment descended on the Israelites. He set fire on the Israelites that were at the rear of the camp. In horror at the instant and excruciating death that was sweeping through their camp, the Israelites pleaded with Moses to intervene. He did, as he prayed to the Lord for mercy. But no sooner did this end than the Israelites and those admirers that fled Egypt with them started complaining again about the manna which God has given them for food. Suddenly, this heavenly food became unattractive when compared to their diets in Egypt. Instead, they wanted fish, cucumber, melon, leek, garlic which were their staples in Egypt. They spurned the food from heaven in favour of that cultivated by man! They were not bothered that their complaining displeased God. And a new round of judgment lurked around the corner for them.

God does not tolerate complaints. It offends Him so much because your complaints show you no longer trust Him. More than that, it is a mark of rebellion and expresses doubt about the ability of God to fulfill His promises. Rather than complain when you face hard times, you should call on the Lord for mercy.

Heart-Felt Righteousness

TEXT: MATTHEW 5:21-26

"Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift" (Matthew 5:23,24)

A direct consequence of the fall of man is the perennial inability of people to live in peace and unity. The history of mankind is unfortunately plagued by crisis, tension, upheavals and wars. Mercifully, the kingdom of God has been revealed through Christ, to show forth God’s mould of righteous, interpersonal undertakings.

Our text reveals the Lord’s admonition on interpersonal relationships for mutual co-existence. He cautioned against anger and the use of intemperate and grievous words. He admonished that exchanging gifts with malice at the background is damning. He counsels against having adversaries to avoid courting unpleasant consequences.

God is the giver of every good and perfect gift. He has given salvation and all necessities of life; the strength and ability to do our work and earn a living. He has also given us spiritual gifts. Above all, He gave His own beloved Son. God gives us in love and requires us to do likewise. And if we live like Him, we will not destroy anyone either by word or deed.

As believers, our offer of gift to God by way of tithes and offering should be a grateful response to all His acts of benevolence and blessings upon our lives. To offer such gifts therefore, we must do so with a heart free from every bit of condemnation. Broken relationships can hinder our relationship with God. An unforgiving grievance with anyone should be resolved to make way for a harmonious relationship with God. Only then can we joyfully and confidently offer our gift.

Child Training

TEXT: JUDGES 13:8-14

"And Manoah said, Now let thy words come to pass. How shall we order the child, and how shall we do unto him?" (Judges 13:12)

The burden and passion for child training and development in the heart of Manoah, Samson’s father, is what is deficient in the world today. And like a sore thumb, the consequences are evident.

In Manoah’s absence, an angel had prophesied about the conception and birth of Samson to his wife. When his wife related the encounter to him, he was so concerned as to go to the Lord in prayers to ask for a confirmation of the prophecy. This act set Manoah apart as a spiritually-minded man who understood the value of prayers in resolving controversies and mysteries. It also showed his concern for the welfare of his wife and that of the baby yet to be conceived. If all the fathers emulate Manoah in terms of prayer and care, marriage and family life will indeed be heaven on earth.

The angel reiterated his earlier instructions to the wife, that is, her diet should be restricted to that of the Nazarites, as a Nazarite from the womb was to be born of her. Mothers also have crucial roles in the upbringing of their children, as their work start at the conception of the baby in the womb. The health of a baby depends so much on the diet and lifestyle of the mother. A gluttonous mother will give birth to an obese child whose future could be ruined by excess sugar levels. A child could develop cancer from the womb of a mother who is a smoker and drunkard.

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). The world is filled with such delinquent acts as thuggery, cultism, prostitution, armed robbery, assassination, kidnapping, examination malpractices, terrorism and such like because the world is in short supply of fathers like Manoah. The world needs godly parents who would be models to those permissive parents in the world.

Beware Of The Pharisees And Sadducees

TEXT: MARK 8:10-21

"And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod" (Mark 8:15)

Of all vices, hypocrisy is the most subtle – and therefore, most damning.

The Lord Jesus Christ was armed with this truth when He warned His disciples to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod. The Pharisees constituted themselves into archenemies of Christ. Their grouse stemmed essentially from the fact that Christ authoritatively reproved them for their contradictions. They could not bear Christ’s fame that was rising exponentially. Therefore, they tried by all means to get rid of Him.

Here, they came tempting Christ by requesting a sign from Him. He declined and sighed at the extent of their insincerity and wickedness. His numerous signs could not change them. He left them and got over to the east shore. There He warned His disciples against the leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod. This has nothing to do with bread as the disciples thought, but the corrupting doctrines and influence of the Pharisees and Sadducees. The Pharisees were noted for hypocrisy (outward righteousness), pride and religious showiness. They equated the tradition of men and rituals with God's word and were legalistic. The Sadducees, represented here by Herod, were promoters of free thinking, skepticism, worldly-mindedness and political exploitation.

The Pharisees and Sadducees of Jesus' days have since expired. But the present age is full of modern Pharisees and Sadducees of whose "leaven" we must beware. They wield powerful influence in society, even in religious circles but their professed worship of God lacks spirituality, sincerity, sobriety and simplicity. Instead, they are selfish, sinful, showy and stubborn. If you are Christ's, you will have nothing to do with such except to grieve over their state.

Wages Of Sin

TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 2:12-36

"Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed" (1 Samuel 2:30)

Living with heaven in view was what Eli, the priest, with his two sons never had. When God gave them the special privilege to assist the people who came to Shiloh to offer sacrifice to Him, He allowed them to have certain parts of the sacrifices. Yet, they were not contented with it. Eli's sons forced the people to give them what they wanted to eat. They also had immoral dealings with the women who assembled there. Samuel never associated with Eli’s sons in their evil acts and God was pleased with him. But He was not pleased with Eli’s sons because of their sin.

Eli merely warned his sons that God would deal with them, but they did not repent. God, in Deuteronomy 21:18-21, had instructed that a father must discipline his son and if his son refused to repent, the leaders of the town should judge him. God put in place that injunction because He wanted evil to be completely removed from among His people. Eli, who knew the character of his sons, ought to have stopped them from performing any duty in God's house. Yet, he allowed them for reasons best known to him. A man of God came to warn him about the consequence of his and sons' sin but they still did not repent.

Today, God is still intolerant of sin; His judgment against sin is fierce. Some leaders prefer their family and ethnic members to occupy one position or the other in the church, even though they know these people are not living right. The warning God gave Eli and his sons is the same warning He is giving to them today. There is judgment hanging upon every sinner, except he or she repents. God can never be taken for granted for He is not a respecter of anyone.

A Sad End

TEXT: 1 CHRONICLES 10:1-14

"So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it" (1 Chronicles 10:13)

The history of the Church is full of stories of men and women whom God picked up from their lowly state and used greatly for the salvation of men only for them to turn around in the latter days of their lives and die in such a miserable state. One of such was a known American who had such a powerful and healing ministry. When he died at the age 59, he was found to have been an alcoholic. The sad end of notable men of God calls today’s Christians to a more careful and sober walk.

Our text presents us with the story of the death of Saul and his sons. Saul had had a wonderful start. When he was picked to be the first king of Israel, he displayed a great sense of humility and obedience to God. But as his reign became strong and powerful, he derailed to a life of selfwill, stubbornness and disobedience to God’s word. He went to the point of practicing necromancy, that is, seeking divination from spirits of the dead. Unfortunately for him, it was in this sad state that he died.

While success in life and ministry is something very desirable, it can become the source of one’s eternal undoing if it is not properly managed. Many people become so blinded and obsessed with success that they forget their humble beginning and early vows and consecration. Others become so arrogant, proud, self-willed and incorrigible. There are those that allow their success to lead them to wrong companies and associations which result in many compromises and unthinkable sinful practices. And there are those who in the bid to sustain their success, look away from God to indulge in satanic and occult practices.

To properly manage our success, we must constantly keep the word of God before us and see that it guides and directs all our actions and decisions. We must also maintain a humble disposition that will help us to seek and receive counsels from those who can help us.

Joy Of Prompt Obedience

TEXT: LUKE 5:27-39

"And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me. And he left all, rose up, and followed him" (Luke 5:27,28).

It is a lot easier to accept God’s calling when it comes to us, no matter how difficult it may seem, than to face the consequence of rejecting or postponing it. The blessedness of obedience at the first call of the Saviour is something that may never be experienced by the hard-hearted sinner whose rebellion must be broken by afflictions and needless pains before they come. So much joy and happiness we lose when we delay.

Our text unfolds with Christ’s invitation to Matthew, the tax collector. He was a man despised for his occupation and lifestyle yet, Christ called him out unto salvation. Christ’s call to Matthew is akin to His call to every believer today. It is a call from a life of sin to that of righteousness. It is a call from our old occupation, companions and commitment to a new vocation and a new friend in Christ Jesus. He has called us to a new goal of preaching the gospel to every creature.

Matthew’s call was glorious but his response was much more glorious and challenging. The call came to him with an apparent suddenness, but his response was equally swift and glorious. His ready heart and self-surrender are a pattern for everyone who hears the gospel message. Like the song writer says “When His message comes to you, There is but one thing to do, Just Obey”.

God’s call must be acknowledged as a privilege which must be gratefully accepted. The believer must receive God’s call wholeheartedly and fulfill it overwhemingly. How terrible will it be if once filthy tax collector abandoned all to serve the Lord, and you fail to do so. Do not allow Matthew the tax collector to stand as witness against you in judgment.

Penitent Heart

TEXT: EZRA 10:6-8

"Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib: and when he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water: for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried away" (Ezra 10:6).

Charles H. Brent, an American clergyman, who served in the Philippines and western New York, once stated: "The happy sequence culminating in fellowship with God is penitence, pardon, and peace – the first we offer, the second we accept and the third we inherit."

The prophet, Ezra, as our text reveals, was a man with uncommon contrite spirit. When he heard of the transgression of his people who came back from exile, he became very sad. He felt they had not learnt their lesson. God allowed them to go into captivity as a form of chastisement to enable them fully evaluate their shortcomings and repent of them in order to have good relationship with Him. Unfortunately, they continued in their old order of sin which attracted the wrath of God upon their lives.

Ezra moved away from the front of the house of God to Johanan’s chamber which was situated in the temple. Johanan was the son of Eliashib, the priest, and he was a man of note. While there, Ezra did not eat any food nor drank any water. He was absolutely sad because the people who returned after the exile were not loyal to God.

It takes a man with uncommon burden to achieve uncommon vision. Today, many Christians have lost the vision to rebuild their lives, families and church to achieve God’s purpose. Some believers are no longer perturbed about the misconducts of their wives, husbands and children, let alone other brethren in the church. They have lost the sense of burden to rescue sinners and backsliders from the claws of sins; they allow them to have comfort in sin. God is counting on us to have the vision of Ezra and become the motivation through which His righteousness can be imparted into others.

Of Cause And Effect

TEXT: ECCLESIASTES 10:8-15

"He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him" (Ecclesiastes 10:8.).

A story was told of an eagle perched on a block of ice just above Niagara Falls. The swift current carried the ice and its majestic passenger closer to the edge of the great precipice. The cries of other birds and animals warning the eagle of the danger that lay ahead were to no avail. "I have great and powerful wings," he boasted. "I can fly from my perch at any time. I can handle it." Suddenly, the edge of the falls was only a few feet away. The torrent of water rushed the block of ice over the great falls. The eagle spread his powerful wings to mount up over the impending doom only to discover too late that his claws had become frozen to the cake of ice. He went headlong with the block of ice to the rocks down the fall.

Many men and women have gone to the grave prematurely due to the damning allure of sin. There is a principle of "cause and effect", or "sowing and reaping" in sin. The consequence of sin is death (physical, spiritual and eternal). Unfortunately, Satan makes sin so appealing and seductive that man's sense of danger is deadened to its damning and dangerous consequences.

The people of Sodom and Gomorrah (ancient examples of present-day homosexuals and lesbians) were so given to their vices that on the eve of their destruction, they were eager to mess up with angels. Samson, a man whose birth was foretold by an angel, and who was a Nazarite from the womb was not excused from the sin spiral. He was so carried away with the pleasure of the flesh that he forgot he was dinning with his enemies. He ended up in the prison of his enemies with his two eyes gorged out.

Children of God are exhorted not to dig the pit of sin, or to break the hedge of the commandments of God. The consequences are always dangerous and damning.

New Birth, Please

TEXT: JOHN 3:5-12

"Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God" (John 3:5

As a leopard cannot change its skin, so can no man, by his own power, change his sinful ways. Birth is the beginning of life and to be born again is to begin a new life with God. This new life has its source in Christ, the Son of God.

In our text, Nicodemus is introduced as a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews. Jesus Christ plainly tells him that except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. This great truth of the necessity of regeneration, a second birth is thus solemnly laid down. Nicodemus did not grasp Christ's message. He however humbled himself and sought for explanation from the Saviour, which He gave willingly. Jesus corrected the erroneous belief that the Messiah would come to condemn the world. He emphasized that God's plan is to save the world and bring judgment and condemnation upon those who reject Him.

God's plan of redemption is for all men, both Jews and Gentiles (John 3:16). The humility in Nicodemus should challenge many today who have a form of godliness but deny the power of God. Church membership, religious observances, alms-giving, natural goodness and tithing without the second birth are worthless and unprofitable.

We must carefully note the progression of the Lord's discourse with Nicodemus. First, a man must be born again to see the kingdom of God (verse 3). Even so, a man must be born of water and of the Spirit to enter into the Kingdom (verse 5). In other words, it is not just enough to see the Kingdom through the new birth; you must enter and can only abide therein as you submit fully to the agency of God's word and the definite leading of the Holy Spirit. If you claim to be born again without being ruled by God's word and led by His Spirit, you are none of His.

Ever The Same

TEXT: PSALM 72:1-20

"His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed" (Psalm 72:17).

All through the ages, enemies of Christ had waged fierce battles against Him. But they have always lost in such battles. The battle began when Herod tried to kill Him at birth and in frustration of not getting Him, directed the massacre of all infants within the age-range of Christ. He thought that with that evil edict, Jesus would be eliminated in the process. Again, he was wrong.

Several attempts were made at His life until the appointed time when a band of evil men crucified Him in line with the Scriptures. Yet, He rose from the dead and ascended up to heaven to be with the Father. Today, despite the fact that He is no longer physically on earth, His enemies are still fighting to obliterate the mention of His name.

In our text today, the Psalmist says that no matter what the enemies of Christ do, His name shall endure forever; that His name will continue as long as the sun continue to shine and that He will continue to bless His people. Although all over the world, believers are being persecuted and martyred, we are not to be discouraged by the spate of these atrocities for we have a God Who is infinitely greater and incomparably superior to our enemies and the awesome challenges we face daily.

Believers must be rest assured that whatever happens, the counsel of the Lord must stand in their lives. Stories abound of believers who passed through tough oppressions in the hands of the enemy, yet they eventually triumphed. No matter the situation, it is sweet to know that nothing can dim the star of a child of God.

Impending Judgment

TEXT: ISAIAH 19:5-10

"The fishers also shall mourn, and all they that cast angle into the brooks shall lament, and they that spread nets upon the waters shall languish" (Isaiah 19:8.).

Henry Drummond, an English banker, politician and writer, noted: "If a man find the power of sin furiously at work within him, dragging his whole life downward to destruction, there is only one way to escape his fate – to take resolute hold of the upward power, and be borne by it to the opposite goal."

Our text reveals God's impending judgment upon the Egyptians because of their evil deeds. Isaiah pointed out that God would raise causes for their destruction from among them, which would be executed speedily, except they repented. The River Nile, which had been their succour in terms of irrigation for their farming, fishing and transportation through boats, would be dried up.

Many other rivers and streams in Egypt would cease to flow. As a result, the plants that grow in the water would die, as well as those that grow near the water. This would cause a lot of lamentations due to the adverse effects on the food supply and economic activities. The fishermen would weep bitterly because they would not see any fish to catch, while people who grow plants for material to make clothes would be helpless. The entire development would bring a great depression on them.

Today, there are those who regale in doing things defiantly, not mindful of the spiritual implication. They believe that since God is seated in heaven, He would not come down to punish them for their evil actions. Just as Korah, Dathan and Abiram, who contended with Moses, had erroneously thought that they could get away with their unruly behaviour, there are those who still behave as if they are the owners of the earth and that God would always tolerate their sins. God does not need physical bullet to punish any erring person or to execute His judgment. He has diverse ways of dealing with people and nations who choose to disobey Him.

Courage In Adversity

TEXT: ACTS 7:57-60

"And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep" (Acts 7:60).

The greatness of a man is not necessarily measured in terms of the accumulation of material perquisites. Greatness is measured in part by the adroitness and strength of character displayed in the face of intimidating odds. It is also quantified through the readiness manifested to be a medium of out-poured grace and blessings to others.

Against the foregoing, Stephen, the first martyr amongst the disciples must be adjudged a great man. The religious leaders understood the meaning and implications of Stephen’s preaching and what it was all about. They could no longer withstand his bold and powerful message. Stephen on the other hand, was not intimidated by the furious and malicious men. The enraged religious leaders went ahead to order that he be stoned to death. In the midst of it, he was courageous, undaunted and uncompromising. He prayed for his persecutors that God should not lay it to their charge.

There are people who are easily crushed and broken in times of difficulties and challenges of life. They think that they are helpless and hopeless. Some who suffer a little defeat are fallen unto the dust of failure, despair and discouragement. A courageous believer can never accept defeat as final because there is something better, higher and brighter ahead. Stephen demonstrated the virtue of true discipleship by asking forgiveness for those hell-bent on killing him. His spirit of forgiveness clearly manifested the divine nature of Christ.

Life is not a treasure for us to tuck away but to invest in the noblest of virtues that count for God. This must be done in spite of the trials, temptation, troubles and challenges of life. The death of Stephen undoubtedly concluded his ministry. Yet, his martyrdom is a testimony to all who will take a courageous stand for Jesus. How courageous are you in times of challenges and battles of life?

Avoid Vainglory

TEXT: JEREMIAH 9:12-26

"Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches" (Jeremiah 9:23).

Undue confidence in one’s intellectual, physical, material and financial acquisitions is a clear manifestation of the pride of life. Man is prone to boast of his achievements as if they were gotten by his power. The human society is replete with vain and arrogant fellows who parade their so-called accomplishments contemptuously and want men to worship their exaggerated sense of self-worth.

These vaunted portraits irritate God. In our text, God told Prophet Jeremiah all that He was going to do against Israel because of their sin. Obviously, there were those in their midst who bragged about their achievements in life. But God told Jeremiah that they should only glory in the fact that they understood and knew God experientially. But they did not.

The almighty God hates swelling words, especially when He knows that man is nothing without Him. This is a wake-up call for every believer today that no matter what we may have acquired or our societal, spiritual, academic or financial attainment, we must be humble in heart and in deed. We must not make a boast of such things as if we were better than any other person. If we do, we are liable to punishment from God.

A pompous disposition irks God; His mercy is for those who recognize the source of their blessings and accord respect to the Giver of such blessings.

When Satan asked Jesus, “If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down…”, he had wanted Jesus to demonstrate physically that He is the Son of God. But Jesus knew it was not Satan’s opinion about Him that matter but the view that the almighty God held about Him. A sincere believer must not engage in unethical or sinful behaviours to prove his worth. It is the net worth approval of God that counts.

Justice Is Sure

TEXT: AMOS 2:1-5

"But I will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem" (Amos 2:5).

Modern theology teaches that there is no hell or a lake that burns with brimstone and fire; only an eternity of bliss in heaven after death on earth. The implication is that man can live here independent of God’s laws, and yet end-up living with Him in eternity.

God endured the antediluvian, that is, the generations before the flood, for about two millennia. When they refused to repent of their sins and wickedness, He flushed them out of the earth with flood. Only eight people survived God’s wrath and punishment.

The people of Sodom and Gomorrah stuck to their lewdness and wickedness instead of repenting of them. When their cup of iniquity became full, angels came and razed the whole place to its foundation. Only Lot and his two daughters survived God’s wrath and judgment. At this time, Judah had left the true worship of God, and went after idols of other nations. God sent Prophet Amos to warn them that He would not condone their evil practices. Judah turned deaf ears to the prophets and ended-up in exile in Babylon.

The judgment of God is imminent upon this present world. It will come upon sinners, as well as upon those who take God and His word for granted like Judah did. You can escape God’s judgment and wrath by turning a new leaf today. It is unwise to continue in rebellion and disobedience only to court God’s indignation in the end. People who fail to learn the lessons of life are doomed to a life of misery in time and eternity.

No High Looks

TEXT: ROMANS 12:1-8

"For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith" (Romans 12:3).

One thing that is very common in our world today is the "notice me" attitude that is being put forth by virtually everyone. This attitude is the thing behind what most people do. But the Spirit of the Lord is warning against such practice in our text. The Lord expects us to present our bodies and yield all we have to Him as living sacrifices. Once this is done, we are no longer in possession of ourselves. All that we have – gifts, talents, treasures, beauties, graces, etc., no longer belong to us. They are now the Lord’s who owns us. This being the case, we can no longer use our bodies and all that we have the way we like. They are to be used to the glory of God.

Having this understanding then, we know that all gifts and graces we possess have been endowed to us by God. In the exercise of these gifts therefore, there must not be a show of pride or boasting. Every gift and privilege must be used with the understanding that it is God that has so graciously endowed us with them. Also, in the exercise of our gifts, we must not try to go out of the limit of the grace that God has given to us. Our ministries must be "…according to the grace that is given to us…" Those who go out of the limit of grace are the self-conceited who desire nothing but a show of self and a pursuit of self glory.

In the same vein, as we recognize our gifts and seek to use them to the glory of God, we must also recognize and appreciate the gifts and grace of God in the lives of others. We must realize that we and others make up the body of Christ and all of us together have important functions in the body. Therefore, we must not do anything to run down, belittle or overshadow other people’s gift, nor prevent them from functioning with their gifts.

Don’t Doubt God

TEXT: DANIEL 11:5-12

"But out of a branch of her roots shall one stand up in his estate, which shall come with an army, and shall enter into the fortress of the king of the north, and shall deal against them, and shall prevail" (Daniel 11:7).

The man who appeared to Daniel after his 21 days of fasting and praying told him that a king in the north would be more powerful than that of the south. But later, they would enter into a peace treaty, which would make the southern king to give him his daughter to marry. The lady would be exalted but she would later lose her position. The woman, with her husband and their children, would be killed. But her brother, who would eventually emerge as the king of the southern kingdom would stage a revenge. He would capture some cities in the northern kingdom and carry their idols and valuable things to Egypt. The king of the north would launch unsuccessful attack on the south. Also, his sons would attack the southern kingdom again and fail.

God’s word will always stand. This prophecy was fulfilled about 350 years later when Philadelphus, the king of Egypt, from the south and king of Syria, from the north, engaged themselves in a serious war. When they settled, Philadelphus gave his daughter, Bernice, to Theos, the king of Syria, as wife. The king of Syria divorced his wife, Laodicea, and married Bernice. Somebody eventually murdered her with her husband and children.

When her brother, Euergetes, heard of her death, he launched an attack against Syria and defeated Callinicus, who later became the king. Soter, who succeeded Callinicus attacked Philopator, the new king of Egypt, and lost the war. The sons of the king of Syria, after gathering a large army, went again to attack Egypt, but they were defeated. The king of Egypt, consequent upon this feat, became very proud.

The prophecy was fulfilled to the letter and this gave credence to what Christ said that “till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled” (Matthew 5:18). Do you still doubt the Second Coming of Jesus, the rapture and Great Tribulation? Do you still doubt that all sinners will go to hell? Repent before it becomes too late.

Obedience Is Key

TEXT: EXODUS 16:22-31

"And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning" (Exodus 16:23).

The children of Israel had been in and out of troubles. They had experienced God’s readiness to protect, deliver and provide. He had never disappointed them, not once. Yet, they never failed to fear each time trouble came their way.

In our text, despite the fact that they were forewarned never to go out on the Sabbath day to look for manna, some of them still went. They suffered from fear and anxiety; they doubted the possibility of having enough for the day if they did not go out. All they needed to do was simply to act as Moses had directed according to the instruction given to him by God. By disobeying God, they incurred His wrath and attracted punishment to themselves.

Holding on to God’s word concerning our lives is the most effective and lethal weapon we can use to silence the voice of discouragement, doubt and fear. Without His word, you do not have a defined destiny. His word, spoken into your life, seals it all. If you keep on believing in the ability of His word to deliver and to provide no matter the circumstances, your strength will be re-invigorated on a daily basis as you keep moving forward and trusting.

Today, we are on a journey to heaven just as the children of Israel were to Canaan. But many believers fret about meagre resources at their disposal. They seem to have forgotten that God has made abundant provision all the way. When we begin to entertain fear, discouragement will set in. The greatest threat to a believer’s success is fear of failure. And until you conquer fear, you cannot conquer your enemy. Your success story will start today if you can only obey and fear not.

Getting It Right From The Root

TEXT: EPHESIANS 2:10-22

"And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone" (Ephesians 2:20).

The dynamics of erecting an enduring structure in ancient times required a start with what builders called an alignment stone for the foundation. The stone lay at an extreme corner to set the parameters for a strong base. This angle of the cornerstone was very precise, determining all of the subsequent lines and other angles of the building. It became a standard for the bearing of the beams and walls in the construction of the whole work. In other words, the strength and durability of the building derived from the alignment stone known in modern times as the cornerstone.

That exactly is what God is teaching believers in today's study: Jesus Christ is the First and Foremost component of the undergirding structure upon which everything else in the Church is aligned. Whatever we teach in the church must line up with the doctrine of our Lord Jesus Christ. We must have concern for the eternal welfare of a spiritually lost world, as well as for the development of God's people to full and perfect growth.

Jesus is the Cornerstone of the foundation of the Church, and those who would build upon that foundation must be diligent to keep their eyes on Him. That is the way to get it right in the Christian race, since "without me (Jesus Christ) ye can do nothing" (John 15:5).

This is the reason why the leaders of the early Church jealously guarded against distraction from the teaching of the sound word of God when there was discontent over food administration to the Gentile widows (Acts 6:1-7). Studying and abiding faithfully with the doctrine of Jesus Christ should form the centre-piece of all activities in the church. All else should be secondary; the same way every element of a building is secondary and dependent on the cornerstone of the structure. Only that way can the believer abide.

In Everything...

TEXT: LEVITICUS 11:1-12

"And the LORD spake unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them, Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth" (Leviticus 11:1,2).

Some Christians ignorantly think that there is a limit to what the word of God demands over their lives. While it is okay for the word of God to regulate how they conduct their spiritual lives, they feel that it is none of God’s business to be concerned with the way they choose to conduct their day-to day physical lives. What has God got to do with what they put on, what they eat, where they go, who they associate with, etc.? They sometimes wonder aloud. In their misunderstanding of what they call Christian liberty and grace, they allow whatever they like in their lives. Of course, such people are never known to be able to live victorious lives.

True Christians are totally under the control of God’s word. God’s word regulates every aspect of their lives. Our reading today carefully illustrates this. The Lord did not only dictate how the children of Israel were to conduct their worship and spiritual lives, He also spelt out how they are to go about their eating habit. He specifically commanded them on the kind of animals and seafood they can eat and those they must avoid. They were not expected to be like the idolatrous nations around them who did not discriminate between clean and unclean animals. Since the children of Israel belonged to Him and He had paid so much to redeem them, He wanted them to be different and unique. He wanted them to preserve their distinctiveness, maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid questionable associations.

The Lord does not want us to take His grace as a license for careless living. We are not at liberty to dress anyhow or conduct ourselves in whichever way we like. We must ensure that our lifestyle and actions do not bring offence to the gospel of Christ. Therefore, everything we do should be to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31).

An Angel Of God

TEXT: JUDGES 13:15-25

"For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. And Manoah and his wife looked on it, and fell on their faces to the ground" (Judges 13:20).

A teacher was explaining to her class the words concerning God's angels, which she called "ministers of His who do His pleasure". She asked, "How do angels carry out God’s will?" Many answers followed. One said, "They do it directly". Another said, "They do it with all their hearts". A third said, "They do it well". And after a pause, a little girl added, "They do it without asking any questions".

The angel of the LORD came with the good news of the conception of Samson to the mother who had been barren for many years. He was recalled by the prayer of Manoah to reiterate his earlier prophecy. As the angel was about to take his leave after confirming His earlier prophecy, Manoah and his wife detained him so as to prepare some refreshments for him. He declined the meal, and counselled them to offer their sacrifice unto the LORD.

From the foundation of the world, angels have been God’s ministering spirits. They do His bidding, will and pleasure. They do it directly. They do it with all their hearts. They do it well. And they do it without asking questions. In the Old and New Testaments, they ministered to the needs of saints, fought the enemies of the children of God, and made sure that the will of God was done at all times.

Our Lord Jesus Christ called the pastors of the seven churches in Asia-minor angels of the church. This means that all leaders at all levels in the church are the angels of the church. The expectations of God concerning His angels today have not changed. They are "ministers of His who do His pleasure". Do you see yourself as an angel of God? Do you do His pleasure or yours? As a priest and king to the Lord, nay, as an angel of God, you need to serve the Lord unconditionally from this day henceforth.

Solemn Warning

TEXT: HEBREWS 10:19-28

"Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised)" (Hebrews 10:23).

Shortly before the Roman General, Titus, sacked Jerusalem and destroyed the temple, the Jews who had turned from Judaism to Christianity were undergoing intense pressure and persecution. They were denied their normal rights as citizens, professionals or artisans. In some cases, they were beaten and dispossessed of their property. This made them wonder if they had not made a grievous mistake in accepting Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Saviour.

When this suffering hit them in the early days of their conversion, they remained faithful. But now, doubts and loss of faith began to creep in as the public ridicule, torments and affliction intensified. These Hebrew Christians began to question if the old order was not better after all.

But the inspired writer of the book of Hebrews insists that Christianity is superior to Judaism. He tells the Hebrew Christians that in every way, Jesus Christ is better and greater than angels, Moses and the Old Testament priests.

Our text comforts and reassures believers that whatsoever they have lost here on earth as a result of their steadfast stand for Christ, they would get in return for more precious assets in heaven when the Lord would take them home to enjoy indescribable joy forever.

As the day of the Lord is fast approaching with increasing signs, we must constantly identify with God’s children and “earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints” (Jude 3).

Never Murmur Against God

TEXT: NUMBERS 11:10-15

"Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger of the LORD was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased" (Numbers 11:10).

In his poem entitled, "The Will of God," Victor Knowles of Peace on Earth Ministries stated: "The will of God will never take you, where the grace of God cannot keep you, where the arms of God cannot support you, where the riches of God cannot supply your needs, where the power of God cannot endow you."

Unfortunately, the Israelites did not realise this, as they were full of complaints and murmuring. Shortly after they had a wonderful praise session by the Red Sea, they complained against Moses and God because they could not get water to drink. Again, as soon as they left Sinai, they complained about the hardships and lack of meat, even though God had been feeding them with manna.

God ensured He fed them with "the bread of heaven." Instead of being contented with it or pray to God for a change of diet, they remembered the fish which they used to "eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick." They forgot the bondage they were in Egypt. Moses was infuriated but took the complaint to God, who could solve any problem.

Unfortunately, many professing believers, today, crave for worldly things instead of having their affections set on things above. Some churches have turned themselves into entertainment venues and not places that can melt sinners' hearts to repentance.

Others have become monetary centres where fellowship bias is for prosperity. Where this is not forthcoming, gimmicks are employed to impress the people. No wonder, God's presence is never experienced and real Christian character never manifested. We need to earnestly return to the undiluted Christian principles so that we can appropriate the best from God.

Discerning God’s Voice

TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 3:1-10

"Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place" (1 Samuel 3:9).

Paul Fritz, Professor of Missions at the Trinity College of Florida, while delivering a message entitled, 'Knowing God's will,' quoted an unknown author and said: "When God bolts the door, don't try to get in through the window."

Our text indicates the first time that God spoke to Samuel. He always slept in the house of the Lord, which had the Ark of the Covenant. He ensured that the lamp which was usually put out every evening, would not go out until the morning. He was diligent in his service to God, helping Eli the priest.

The Lord had not spoken to Samuel before in a clear voice until this time. In those days, it was gathered that the Lord hardly ever spoke directly to people and did not appear to them in dreams very often either. Some Bible scholars noted that in the days of Moses and Joshua, the Lord often spoke to the leaders of the Israelites. But when the people went into sin, worshipping foreign gods, God could not speak to them in clear voice anymore. Yet, one night, He called Samuel, as Eli was asleep in his room. When he heard the Lord's voice, he thought it was Eli's and he ran to him. Eli told the boy that he was not the one calling him. This happened thrice before Eli realized it could be God calling Samuel. He therefore taught the boy the proper way to reply the Lord.

Our text, which is quite significant, indicates that God can speak to His children through a clear audible voice. But when there is sin, He can be completely silent. God stopped speaking to the Israelites when sin came in. This in effect, means that sin can strain our relationship with God. He was able to speak to Samuel because the boy's way pleased Him. So, if our ways please Him, God will surely draw us closer to Himself. The choice is entirely ours.
