Laive: Wrong.... Man's age - 5X Son's age - X Four years ago the product of their ages (not the son's age) was 448 (x-4) (5x-4) = 448 5x^2 - 24x - 432 =0 Using the quadratic formula X= 12 or X= -7.199 As we know age cannot be negative so the son's age is 12 years. The father's age is 60 years 1 Like |

Wealthgang: It is basic math, but this is the fall out of exam runs, both in secondary schools and universities, COE. In years to come, there would be dunces as teachers trying to impart nonsense into kids. 1 Like |

Am a big lover of mathematics, but lately am losing interest. Sincere question, how can this be use to solve economy situation, or how is this applicable in real life. While some School Cert holder are discovering new inventions in China, we are here looking for 'X' Who X help Nigeria education sector needs review. My opinion 1 Like |

The questions are not difficult.Somebody has solved the 2nd one.As for the ist one,let the son's age be x,man's age=5x.Son's age 4yrs ago=x-4,dad's age 4yrs ago=5x-4. Product of their ages=(x-4)(5x-4)=448, 5x2-4x-20x+16=448 5x2-24x+16-448=0 5x2-24x-432=0,factorise.After factorisation,x=12,therefore son's age is 12,father's age=5×12=60 You can check it this way,4yrs ago product of their ages is 448,son's age 4yrs ago=12-4=8,father's age=60-4=56,product of their ages 4yrs ago= 8×56=448 |

Horlawale1: Funny though...but truth is it helps to broaden your mind and mental capacity. Your ability to find X is an indication that you will make a good problem solver. The problem is just that we do not use that mental prowess for inventions. We are either too scared or easily discouraged in our clime and lastly the hurry to be in wealth will see the best brains rushing to grab big paying jobs and forget about using their brains to create and invent things...Also...The environment is not enabling enough...and so on and on... 1 Like |
