I can't across a thread where some ignorant motorist changed his radiator to double cell and removed car thermostat and people started replying with sarcasm. One of the replies requested for both cooling fans to be made to be on constantly. Now the argument is what is the effect as the writer clearly meant it will take longer for engine to reach optimum temperature. Now the question is if the car had an intact thermostat will it will reach optimum temperature same time as one not running constantly as the thermostat will only open at a certain temperature to allow cool radiator coolant. Saw this argument online and most agreed at same time saying only disadvantage is life span of said fans will reduce by constantly running. Any contrary ideas? |

Even if the thermostat is closed, the fan will keep blowing cool air to the engine though it's effect might be almost negligible but it will slightly increase the time the car will run rich. The more important is the load the fans create on the electrical system. More load = more power requirement = higher fuel consumption. Some of these fans draw as high as 8A each. If the two run continously, that's about 16A. That is significant load. 1 Like |

0rex:Dont forget the Load is on the battery only. |

erico2k2:Nope. It is on the alternator which is driven by the engine's output. The battery is principally for starting the engine and smoothening the alternator's output ( just like a big capacitor). If you want to test my theory, watch your car's engine RPM guage carefully when the engine is running, then turn on your high beams. You would notice a slight drop and rise in engine RPM. It would be easier to notice this in a car with a shot ISC (Idle Speed Control) system as there is nothing boosting up the engine's speed when loaded. 3 Likes |
