So I came across a custom BIOS for the 290X and decided to see how far I could push my 290X. This card is a beast, 3yrs old but it pumps out some decent results. I have to warn though overclocking on a custom bios can see you power requirements sky-rocket and you'll see why soon. Clearer pictures - https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B5gP1lXvmMe5QlRrZVVJZVNNQW8 CPU Defaul[/b]t 4.4Ghz [b]Overclocked 4.8Ghz Default clocks - 1000Mhz core, 1250Mhz Memory Overclocked - 1250Mhz core, 1500Mhz Memory - 25% increase on core, 20% increase on Memory Temperature (maximum recorded using waterblock) Default 44C Overclocked 56 C - 27% increase Voltages core Default - 1.156V Overclocked - 1.352V - 14.6% increase Voltage Memory Default - 1V Overclocked - 1.094V - 9.4% increase Power consumption ( Maximum recorded- note this is the whole system, CPU, GPU, Mobo, HDD etc) Default - 384W Overclocked - 712W - 85% increase 3D mark scores (this is a synthetic benchmark and does not necessarily indicate perfromance in game play) Using only the graphics score - http://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/9173598/fs/9173165 Default - 12 149 overclocked - 14 752 - 21.4% increase

RX480: Oh no, not downgrading...will be making a test bench to share some benchmarks using maxwell tech. There are over 2 dozen GPU's coming to Nigeria (380x/290x/GTX960/GTX970) What's with your handle RX480? you got one? |

With the release of support for Vulkan, a low level API for DOOM 2016, I'll be deviating from just getting 60FPS but comparing the performance between using OpenGL and Vulkan on the AMD 290X. Game currently being downloaded from Steam so will update soon. |

[size=14pt]DOOM 2016 @ 1080P[/size] Ultra settings, everything absolutely maxed out. Vulkan has brought improvements and scales very well with the number of CPU cores you have. Frametimes have reduced and translates to a higher framerate. Here we see a 28% increase in performance...which is very welcome...Nvidia's pascal hasn't seen such improvements, they probably release a patch soon but bear in mind this is a 3 year old AMD GPU. I'm impressed. DX11 had a much bigger CPU overhead and that crippled AMD cards. DX12 and Vulkan give some performance boost to older gen cards.

Seeing the performance gains with Vulkan, it was a no brainer to push some more pixels through the 290X and see how it'll handle near 4K resolutions and I am pleased with the results. AMD GCN cards ( from GCN1.1, I think) have a featured called VSR(virtual super resolution) that allow the GPU to upscale resolutions upto 3840x2160 on a 1080p monitor where it gets downsampled. For the 290X, it's maximum is 3200x1800, well not quite 4K resolutions but pushing 5.7million pixels, no b joke. Average framerate was around 55FPS, with Ultra settings, totally playable.

It's all about the average though not just seeing the 60fps and calling it a day, take Arkham knight and rise of the tomb raider for instance, I still see frame rate drops to 48 sometimes, as for dark souls 3, it drops sometimes when it autosaves on 970. |

AKBliv010:I got both the app and d game from a friend. Without the app installed, the game will still work tho. But it wont go past the loading screen. And give u a notification of something about Rock star social club. The app is like every other windows app tho. Just google Rock Star social club. And u should be able to dload it. Install it. And hopefully, the game should work |

D3l: With the settings I've used my average is greater than 60fps. Hence why thread title is achieving 60+..If I notice a drop in framerate below 60fps in the titles I've tried..I lower some image quality settings Auto saves and cut scenes aren't really part of the game-play so I'd disregard that. purplekayc:I like both DX12 and Vulkan as they bring performance gains on both camps(Nvidia & AMD). The main difference is Vulkan is cross platform (just like OpenGL is) it'll run on Linux, Mac, Windows, Android etc, whereas DX12 only works with Windows 10. AMD GPU's with the GCN 1.1 architecture and greater are seeing the biggest jumps in performance in DOOM as id software released a Vulkan patch where AMDs 'Bonaire' and 'Hawaii' chips (2012/2013) have significant gains but Nvidia lastest cards GTX1000 series getting lower gains. Ashes of the Singularity a DX12 title has also seen older gen AMD cards perform much better. Hence for my next test card it going to be the R9 380(GCN 1.2) instead of a GTX 960 first |
