Possible causes;

1. I think it was not sited far away from a septic tank...
2. The direction of flow of the underground water might be from a highly polluted area.
3. Shallow Depth of the borehole might also be the cause.

we had s similar experience in my own.but first it started when the borehole was not pump regularly, but when we started pumping almost everyday the ratlike smell disappear. but I. can't tell if there was a dead rat inside the hole.so I advice pump regularly once or twice a day.

check the tank. it has happened to us. our water from tank started smelling, on checking we discovered a pigeon died inside the tank.

Flush the water in the bore hole thoroughly , if the smell persist... Try avoid usage of the water from the bore hole, it might be as a result of ground water contamination,...

It's from the borehole, it happens sometimes I don't think they dug deep enough, it'll eventually pass.

Kill the rat and everyone in that house as well.

Check the bore hole area ,look if there is any hole aroud the 4 inch pipe inside the ground,MAYBE RAT or SNAKE if u live in bushy area., may have entered inside and died because any crawing or moving animal that enter cannot come out for the pipe inner area is slippry.you need to call a qualify plumber for total flushing and service.that why it is advice always to be careful with bore hole area.sorry

Use detergent and chlorine To wash the tank and also use a smaller quality tiny of same poured into the hole, pump for a while, say 30 minutes, then you're good to go.

Look for Borehole specialist . They will use compressor after putting some chemicals into the well then compressed the BH well to have portable water again. I'm a Geologist residing in PH If you can afford it I should be reach on 08031969647.

Two options for you people: (1). Try flush out the water in the borehole with machine, for new fresh water.

If that doesn't work out; try this second option.

(2). Buy two rat gums... One for the tank, the other for the borehole. The curse is over.

Op,you people should try and flush the borehole or you leave the borehole pump to run for hours. If it the situation is still the same,you people would have to install necessary things for water treatment. Chlorine does eliminate water odour.

Op, oluwabigloba, just to let you know that this happens to our well every dry season, January in particular. I live in the SW.
Having partly read through the thread, i think dabongys explanation makes sense.
We don't drink from the well, but since the first time I noticed l started using waterguard to treat before it is used to cook and disinfectant before used in the grooming room.

The odour can be from the contamination of the underground water by chemical substance or dissolved rock particles since you have washed the tank.stop drinking the water then you need to take the sample of the water to Food scientist or Lab scientist for proper test.They are the people that know what's really wrong with the water.

The best possible procedure is take sample to microbiology lab for microbial analyses.


From there, you'll be advised accordingly!
