Like most Nigerians,i was really disappointed in the performance of the Eagles lets leave Super out of it for now yesterday & the likelyhood of us failing to qualify for the World Cup in SA 2010. However ,one player has been singled out for criticism out of the whole lot - Mikel Obi. There is a school of thought that says ,his move to Chelsea (then under Jose Mourinho) screwed up his playing style by turning a potentially skillful attacking midfielder into a rather slow & immobile defensive player. The other school of thought disagrees with this view . . . So tell me which side are u on - with reasons of course ? |

That guy would have been better without Chelsea. He was destroyed by Mourinho. |
Re: Mikel Obi,Chelsea ,Mourinho And Football Formations by illusion2: 8:38pm On Sep 07, 2009 |
agabaI23:how & why bro? Personally,i believe his move to chelsea adverselt affected his style of play: Chelsea play 4-3-3 formation ,where the defensive midfielder is essentially an extra defender allowing the 2 other midfielders go on the offensive. This formation limits the movement of the defensive midfielder cos he's essentially tasked with breaking down opposition play. If he had gone to Man U however, they play typical (until recently with the exit of Ronaldo) 4-4-2 just like Nigeria, the 'defensive midfielder' here apart from breaking down play also initiates attack along side the central attacking midfielder (No 10 ) So Mikel may have fitted our style of play better if he had moved to Man U or a similar team where his solid ball skills (control, holding the ball & above average passing) would have come out. |

It is his own fault. He is not the only defensive Midfielder in the world, he should take a cue from Makalele who's a former Chelsea player and a classic model for a libero. He messed up his gameby himself and not the 'SPECIAL ONE' Mourinho molded him to be a defensive player with an attacking instinct but he killed it himself. |
Re: Mikel Obi,Chelsea ,Mourinho And Football Formations by dipo2much(m): 9:26pm On Sep 07, 2009 |
Mikel Obi's talent is as an attacking midfiled player. We all saw what he did in the WYC then.He is can give a deadly pass for an average striker to look like the best. But Mourinho messed him up. I am sure by now mikel cannot play as a midfielder again. He just wouldnt be as creative as he was. What he specialises in now is making stupid tackles and trying to be a tout like ballack |

i am so bored with this Mikel/Mourinho debate. If a player just loses his creative side just because he's been played outta position, then maybe that player was never good in the 1st place 1 Like |

MIkel to blame for the draw?! are you smokin smething expired?! he played as the only defensive midfielder for more than 20mins and still managed to make the run that resulted in the second goal. better go and watch the match again, stop looking for scapesgoats, if you need any, i can feed you the coach, who sent 5 men forward and let the tunisian run over us in the midfield!!! 1 Like |

You folks are very funny but I guess you are only looking for a scape goat. Enough of this debate. slimshay:True talk. One would think that all the players on the pitch go by the name of "Mikel". That said, the lad simply needs to step up his game. It's about time. |
Re: Mikel Obi,Chelsea ,Mourinho And Football Formations by MrTA(m): 9:03am On Sep 08, 2009 |
As much as I want to blame someone else for Mikel's failings. It is himself he needs to look at. Yes, when he was younger we was developing into and attacking midfield in the Ballack or even Lampard mould (without as many goal) but all that would have come with time. At Chelsea that seems to have been restricted. But the role he's asked to play allows him to be more creative if not necessarily more attacking. Essien does as much Screening of the defense as anyone at Chelsea but his attacking instinct is never curbed. (I agree Essien is a much better player). I think at the point he can continue his developement as a midfield enforcer and we can only hope we can unearth another midfield sensation to partner him who isnt called Olofinjana or Etuhu! |

For all those who post without reading through previos posts. . . . .take ya time o ! NOBODY IS BLAMING ANY PLAYER FOR THE TUNISIA DRAW (at least Im not) ,personally I would lay any blames at the doorstep of the coaching crew, cos they choose the team, tactics etc. . . Now back to Mikel & his game before & after his Chelsea move. . . . |

Nigerians blaming a Holding midfielder for their misdemeanour! Ha ha ha ha ha, its like me blaming Gilberto Silva for Brazils failure, or Maschareano for Argentina’s failure! So Nigeria is a one man team, Jose saw some thing in Mikel and he was bold enough to change him |
Re: Mikel Obi,Chelsea ,Mourinho And Football Formations by sley4life(m): 4:33pm On Sep 08, 2009 |
mikel is over hyped. He is not a club nor national team material. A back passer. Played more than 60 EPL games but scored non. Even ashely cole a defender scores. He should just join trading, We dont need him in super eagles. We have thousands of midfielders in nigeria |
Re: Mikel Obi,Chelsea ,Mourinho And Football Formations by chidichris(m): 9:18am On Sep 09, 2009 |
as long as it is mikel issue, it is always a hot topic for the hot guy. his movement to chelsea was never designed to please any slowpoke or junkie arround but to make life better for himself and that of his family member who from time to time go to God with thanksgiving for the gift of a messiah in man's form. to me, i think each an everyone of us here shld be more interested in finding out how we have been representing ourselves, families and nigeria as a whole. the coach selected the best players but they failed to impress so it is always the coach's duty to go back to his drawing board to know what ent wrong. most ganja ppl voicing out thrash here will jump to any chance of been half of mikel. if we have forgotten, among all the players that performed on sunday, mikel is the only one who has question to answer even when he is not the captain. this kind of topic is only common to nigerians and nigeria alone. this mikel topics here and there are making us look stupid in our arguements. in a very plain language, can anyone here tell me, WHO IS MIKEL IN NIGERIA FOOTBALL? |
Re: Mikel Obi,Chelsea ,Mourinho And Football Formations by illusion2: 12:12am On Sep 10, 2009 |
He's one of the few Nigerians playing at the highest level. . . |
Re: Mikel Obi,Chelsea ,Mourinho And Football Formations by chidichris(m): 11:51am On Sep 10, 2009 |
He's one of the few Nigerians playing at the highest level. . . @illusion2 , u are surposed to be illusion 1 not 2. what is the meaning of playing at the highest level? where is messi playing? maybe at the lowest level? are the argentines doing well? is messi been singled out for blame? the problem with us is that we always leave the objects for shadow. why can't someone voluntier to replace mikel in the team? essien was injured and stayed away for about 8 months yet ghana and chelsea did not wait for him to return b4 facing their oponents. the much talked about okocha was in the team when we did not qualify for the last world cup. amodu was there when the tunisians replied our first goal immediately and the second had the same answer yet none of is saying anything about the need for a coach to talk to his players immediatelt they scored a dying minute goal. the truth is that mikel is never the problem of nigerian football but an individual strugler who has succeeded in making his family proud so the envious and jealous positions of nigerians has little or no impact in his destiny. |

chidichris:We are on the same page my brother. . . the coach indeed has most of the blame. . . this thread is to discuss if Mikel's move to Chelsea affected his style of play negatively (ie turned him from an attacking midfielder to a much slower defensive one). |

omar22: Don't mind them my brother. If Wenger had done that they won't shout Monkey no fine, him mam a like am. Mikel who earn 30k now receives 70k just to keep him in Chelsea @all If you like him or not, he remains Okocha's replacement Quote me if you can |
Re: Mikel Obi,Chelsea ,Mourinho And Football Formations by illusion2: 2:21pm On Sep 10, 2009 |
dason4life:Tho' i disagree with your last statement about him replacing Okocha, its good you mentioned Wenger, the irrepressable Gunner's manager. Arsenal play the typical French style of 4-5-1,which is not the same as the 4-3-3 chelsea play. In the 4-5-1 formation, you have 2 'holding' midfielders and one 'central midfielder' who plays really deep, and then 2 wingers and a striker. Brazil has adopted this styl as well as my darling team Liverpool. So you have Fabregas,Kaka,Gerrard, playing this deep central midfielder role whih was perfected by Zinedine Zidane. If Mikel were in such a formation & playing this role that would be a different case, however what we play in Nigeria 1s the typical English,MAN U 4-4-2. |
