Applications in Windows have the ability to add an option to the right-click context menu that allows you create a new file. You can create a new MS Word file, a new text file or a new Photoshop file on the go. This same option does not exist in macOS but if you are looking for a way to actually add it, there is an app called New File Menu that allows you do just that. It’s an app in the Mac App Store that costs $1.99 and it perfectly copies the new file from a context menu feature in Microsoft Windows on macOS. Though the app functions as a Finder extension and also allows you to select which apps should appear in the right-click context menu.

Now, install New File Menu and enable it as a Finder extension. To do this, open the Settings app, go to Extensions and enable it.



Now, right-click inside any Finder window and you will see more options to create a new RTF document, a new text file, a new Pages document and so on. The given options are added regardless if you have the MS Office apps or Pages apps installed. You can customize which new file options you would want to appear in the right-click context menu, by going to New File Menu’s preferences.



The “Templates” tab in the New File Menu’s preferences allows you to choose which of the apps should appear in the right-click context menu. You can as well change the order in which apps appear in.



By default, the New File Menu will only create a new file which is exactly the same thing that happens in Windows. Now the file is created but not opened and the app which the file belongs to isn’t launched. With the New File Menu, you also have the option to open the file automatically once it’s been created. To enable this option, go to General tab in the app’s preferences and enable the option “Open file on creation finish”.



The app is just awesome with the functionality it adds is just exceptionally useful, all this for $1.99.
