Soccer, to many, is the best sport to have ever graced the planet and serves as a unifying force or factor among various people and different cultures of the world. The round-leather game has attracted a lot of fans and fanatics alike based on individual perspective and outlook. While some view the sport as a recreational activity meant to relax one's self, others are of the opinion that it is a die-hard activity.
It is obvious however, that the modern day soccer has taken new twists and turns in its execution and has become more attractive as a sport compared to that of the last century. In terms of organization, investment, participation and teams' different tactical approaches to matches, you will agree with me that Soccer is the fastest growing sporting activity in the world.
Furthermore, it is the case that the number of football players are innumerable but not all are destined to be soccer greats. Not even all players that are termed 'great' are as successful as they want depending on their definition of 'successful'. Some have won a lot of trophies but the continental championship and world cup titles have eluded them. Notable veterans who have left indelible marks in soccer history include Ferenc Puskas, Alfredo Di Stefano, Michel Platini, Johan Cruyff and a host of others. Some great players are successful with their national teams, some with clubs and some with both.
The likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo(the world's better players in over seven years) are successful individual players who have won league and cup trophies with their various clubs but none of the duo has neither won the FIFA world cup nor conquered at continental level.
Messi led Argentina to second place at the 2014 FIFA world cup in Brazil, failing once more to lift the trophy for a first time in his career. He has won the FIFA ballon d'Or a record five times (2009, 2010,2011,2012,2015); the FIFA U-20 world cup; Olympic men's football gold medal; Copa del Rey; La liga; FIFA club world cup; UEFA champions league e. t. c. The South American has broken several records and set others having also accrued a good number of individual accolades.
Similarly, Portuguese talisman Cristiano Ronaldo has not recorded much success with his national team, even at continental level. He has also never triumphed in a world cup finals. A 31-year old and glaringly, not getting any younger, Ronaldo has been successful with both Manchester United and Real Madrid. He won the UEFA Champions league and the English Premier League with the Red Devils. He also claimed the first of his three ballon d'Or awards while a United player in 2008. CR7 went on to win the La liga; Copa del Rey; FIFA club world cup; UEFA Champions league e .t .c with Real Madrid.
Certain legendary soccer stars gifted with intrepid and mouth-watering command of the game coupled with unparalleled football skills, can be termed 'unlucky' not to have won the ballon d'or during this period of the pair's unrivalled reign. Players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Arjen Robben, Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, Andrea Pirlo e .t . c are players who have excelled at the world stage and proven to be indispensable to their various teams.
Roberto Baggio, like several other soccer elites won the ballon d'Or and a host of other trophies and awards but did not claim the european championship trophy or the world cup. He helped Italy to a 2nd runners-up spot and a second place finish at the 1990 & 1994 world cup tournaments respectively. This is not the case with icons such as Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo de Lima and Diego Armando Maradona, who all have immortalized their names in soccer history, forever, not only by being the better things to have ever happened to world football, but also due to the fact that they have elevated themselves and team-mates to being world cup champions, continental championship winners or both.
Moreover, it is apparent that not all soccer greats will claim the
continental title or the FIFA world cup title owing to different factors. Some may not be surrounded by the calibre of players as themselves and so might not be propelled to win a major trophy as they cannot do so single-handedly. Ronaldo de Lima won the 2002 world cup with Brazil because he had 'world-class' players as his team-mates - Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Ze Roberto, Ronaldinho e .t. c. Winning a major international tournament also involves the tactical prowess of teams based on the technical know-how of the team coach and players alike, and not necessarily as a function of the number of stars or 'world-class' players present in the team.
Lionel Messi failed in a second consecutive bid to win the Copa America,
losing out on both occasions to South American arch-rivals, Chile. Messi, with his greatness and football splendour, has, yet again missed a great chance to win a major piece of silverware with the Albiceleste.
Interestingly however, the world's attention will turn to the Stade de France on Sunday as hosts, France take on Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in the final of UEFA EURO 2016. This is a big chance for Ronaldo to finally lay claim on a major title with Portugal. But with the devastating attackers Les Bleus can boast of, Ronaldo and Portugal's dream might not come true. France will be buoyed by the fact that they have won in all of their last ten meetings with Portugal. Will Portugal win the EURO 2016? Only time will tell if the 2015/2016 UEFA champions league winner will break the long-standing hoodoo.
