Yusuf to be named Chief Coach

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has secured a $1.5 million bond from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to take care of the salary and other emoluments of Super Eagles’ foreign coach, reports AfricanFootball.com.

The Federal Government has made it clear it will not pay for any foreign coach hired by the NFF for the Super Eagles ahead of the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup, but could approve such appointment if the federation guaranteed the payment of such a coach.

“The NFF now has a bond of $1.5 million from NNPC and so they can employ a foreign coach,” a top official said.

“The era of the federation owing coaches their salaries will now be history.”
Frenchman Paul le Guen, Belgian coach, Tom Saintfiet and the country’s caretaker coach, Salisu Yusuf, have been shortlisted for the Super Eagles top post.

The NFF said the successful coach will now be announced on July 18.

Nigeria is drawn in a tough World Cup qualifying group that has Africa’s number one team Algeria, nine-time World Cup finalists, Cameroun and 2012 African champions, Zambia.

The Eagles begin their qualifying campaign for Russia 2018 on October 3 in Zambia.

Meanwhile, the NFF have expressed confidence they will convince the caretaker coach, Salisu Yusuf, to work with a foreign coach even after he insisted he wishes to head the Super Eagles on a permanent basis.

The 54-year-old Yusuf has been assistant coach to Stephen Keshi, Sunday Oliseh and Samson Siasia, and he has made it very clear he now wishes to lead the Super Eagles beginning with the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign.

However, the NFF will on today consider either Paul Le Guen or Tom Saintfiet for the top Eagles post, while also getting Yusuf on board but as chief coach with a renegotiated contract and more responsibilities.

And already a number of top personalities have reached out to the former Enyimba and Kano Pillars coach to accept this role.
