With effects from July 2016, tourists, business merchants and others visiting Uganda will have to apply for their visas and permits online, due to the introduction of the new e-Visa system.

Visas that can be applied for include Multiple-Entry visa, Diplomatic and Official visa, Ordinary visa, East Africa Tourist Visa (multiple entries valid for 90 days to Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda) and Transit visa. The decision taken on the application will be sent electronically through the email provided by the applicant. If approved, an approval letter will be sent as an attachment to the email provided. The applicant will be required to print it out and present it together with a valid passport / travel document at the point of entry.

Commenting on the new system, Ugandan ICT Minister, Frank Tumwebaze said that the e-Visa system will not only save time but also reduce on the human contact which many times see people ask for kickbacks in order to help travellers.

The Uganda Electronic Visa/Permit Application System performs checks against law enforcement databases. All travellers seeking admission to Uganda are required to obtain a Visa using this system prior to being granted boarding. If your visa or permit application is approved, it establishes that you are eligible for the approved visa or permit, but does not establish that your application is definitely approved.

Upon arrival to Uganda (at the selected point of entry) or to the Immigration Office Headquarters, visitors will be inspected by an Immigration Officer who determines the approval of their applications. However, if you are out of Uganda, it is mandatory to present a valid visa approval letter for entering in Uganda. Any other permit does not allow you to enter the country.

The holder will also be allowed to move out of the Republic of Kenya, Republic of Rwanda and Republic of Uganda; and return without having to pay for another visa. However, this will only be applicable for a period of 90 days.
