'H.O. Davies, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Ernest Egbuna, Louis Mbanefo. 1938.  Four legends in their own right. H.O.Davies QC SAN was a fearless, brilliant lawyer and nationalist. The high point of his career, in my view, being his appointment as the only African lawyer that defended Jomo Kenyatta during the Mau-Mau trials. He and Rotimi Williams were appointed as the first Nigerian Queens Counsel in 1959.

Zik we know about. Ernest Egbuna was the second Igbo lawyer, a highly articulate and  cerebral politician and nationalist, whose career was cut short by his early demise.

Sir Louis Mbanefo was the first Igbo lawyer, a highly principled, strong character and a brilliant lawyer and jurist. Sir Louis was the first Nigerian to be appointed to the World Court at the Hague, in 1963, in ad-hoc capacity. He famously participated in the judgment in the South-West African cases, where the treatment of the South-West African nations by South Africa was condemned by the ICJ. Sir Louis contributed that whilst the administrative reporting and monitoring duties ceased on the dissolution of the League of Nations, the moral obligations of the Mandate state continued beyond the dissolution of the League of Nations and such an obligation was essentially binding on the Union of South Africa. (this was a dissenting position). He was the first Chief Justice of Eastern Nigeria, a Justice of the Supreme Court and of the Republic of Biafra.'
