Indisputably, the Ronaldo vs Messi debate turns head like no other in the soccer world. So contentious is the debate that it has resulted in lives being lost, marriage being broken, and friendships being turned to enmities - literally. This debate doesn't seem ready to be going away anytime in the foreseeable future. Undoubtedly, being a soccer fan authorizes one with the privilege to choose who one's favorite player is irrespective of what others feel. Therefore, it is understandable to expect such rivalry between the fans of these two who have been consistently astonishing in the last decade.
To Messi's fans, his tendency to marvel the world at will, mesmerize opponents with his extraterrestrial skills, score mind blowing goals at consistent rate, set up goals for his teammates and his humility on and off the field makes him better than anyone playing soccer. Ronaldo's fans' sentiments arise from the fact that he is a proven hard worker on and off the field, a consistent goal scorer, a proven class across two top leagues, a speed demon, his beautifully configured physique and an audacious lifestyle off the field. Both are right.
Messi is better than Ronaldo in his own ways, and Ronaldo is equally better than Messi is his own ways. Where the base arises is judging both players using their characters as human beings, and personal lives off field as yardsticks. That is sheer hypocrisy!
No single individual in the world can lay claim to perfection. Cristiano and Lionel are no different. They are human beings with their several imperfections. They may have contrasting characters off field but that doesn't in anyway invalidate the fact that they are geniuses on the soccer pitch. Acclaiming Ronaldo has been better than Messi because of Messi's tax evasion conviction, his sheepish nature, his love for tattoo, and his low celebrity life, is high-level hypocrisy. Approving Messi as the better player of the duo, because Cristiano is seemingly proud, over confident and flamboyant, and his sex life is equally hypocritical. Our standards as human beings do not make us lesser or better than another being. We are who we are, thanks to factors that are beyond our own makings. Where the real difference comes in, is how much success each record in their respective professional lives on the field.
Both of them should be compared on the basis of their personal statistics on the field (such as goals, assists, chances created, dribbles completed, etc.), how many trophies they won in their respective careers, how many awards each wins on individual level, and how many moments we marvel in their brilliance. This is what they share together, not their humanness. Let's stop the hypocrisy, and enjoy the grace of being able to watch them perform at such astonishing levels week in, week out.
