Resigned By Real Madrid Is Alvaro Morata Making The Right Move? by luciomoggi(m): 1:40pm On Jul 20, 2016

It is no longer news that Alvaro Morata will be staying back in Real Madrid next season after the Spanish club triggered his Juventus buy-back clause of €30 million , with Juventus making a profit of €10 million after signing him for €20 million in 2014.

The Madrid born forward joined Juventus in 2014 after growing impatient as a result of limited game time and playing second fiddle to star man Karim Benzema. At Juventus, Morata not only scored important goals but also became a big game player scoring twice in the two semi-final Champions League games against Real Madrid, final against Barcelona and also the Coppa Italia final against AC Milan last season.

Morata returns to Madrid more experienced and mature player after making over 63 appearances for Juventus in Seria A in his two years at the club. Morata will provide Zinedine Zidane with a plan B as his aerial and positional ability in the final third is impressive. The forward is also a more defensive player than Benzema with his ability to tackle and press the opposition quickly to win back the ball when dispossessed will be handy against more physical teams in the Spanish La Liga like Sevilla, Athletic Bilbao , Villarreal and Atletico Madrid who in the past have been a thorn in the flesh of Real Madrid. The signing of the former Castilla graduate is also a big plus considering it will take him little time to adapt as he knows the club in and out having spent six years at the club before his exit in 2014 (2008-2014). Another important point to be noted in the signing of the forward is his young age (23) and versatility as he can operate also in the forward left position in a 4-3-3 formation.

With all these points stated, it is unlikely that Morata will dislodge Benzema as the French man is miles ahead of him in quality . To illustrate further, Morata has never been a first choice striker in his professional career as both Carlos Tevez and Paulo Dybala were ranked ahead of him in Juventus. Morata also has a poor goal scoring record as his seven goals in 34 (16 starts) Seria A games last season show his poor conversion rate not forgetting his Juventus Seria A record of 15 goals in 63 games . This is poor compared to Dybala who made his debut last season but ended up upsurging Morata as the main striker, scoring 19 goals in 34 Seria A games (the same number of games with Morata but with more starts-29) . Last season, Benzema scored an impressive 24 league goals in 27 games for Real Madrid and when compared with that of Morata shows a big gap although it could be argued that Benzema had better players like Ronaldo, Bale and Modric who created chances for him but it could also be argued that Morata played in a weaker league (Seria A) than that of Benzema's (Real Madrid). Going by form and stat , Morata will likely continue to play second fiddle to Benzema which might cause discomfort and problems in the dressing room as the player is likely resort to causing unrest reminiscent of his last spell at the club which is detrimental to team unity. With Christiano Ronaldo assured of a starting role In the forward left position and Gareth Bale in the forward right, Moratta's versatility is likely not needed as he will only play when these players are injured. Last season, Zidane played Ronaldo upfront as the main striker in the absence of Benzema with some success and this is likely to continue next season which will further complicate issues for Morata.

"I've already given Morata some advice: he needs to stay at Juventus.

"He must stay in Juventus to keep growing, because he hasn't yet reached that level of balance and strength that a player must have, because he's still just 23.

"Above all because Juventus is one of the biggest clubs in the world, it always has been, but especially in recent years," was the advice Juventus coach Max Allegri gave to Morata before his exit this summer.

It is shocking that rather than remain in Juventus where he will get more game time even with Dybala ahead of him or move abroad to a team he is guaranteed game time, Morata moved back to Real Madrid where he is likely to experience the same things he did in his first spell at the club.

Morata's choice must be respected but he must be reminded that very little has changed as regards his growth as a player and the form of Karim Benzema in Real Madrid.
