Why did God give the Law to Moses... continued
In the book of Exodus when the children of Israel were delivered from Egypt... we tend to think of Israel as... God's people, the people of God, the people that belonged to God, the people that followed God, the people that loved God.
However, this was not the case at all... the children of Israel were a stiff-necked (prideful, stubborn and rebellious) chaotic rabble of slaves
Gal 3:19 What purpose then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions...
God gave the law to Moses because of the violating, law-breaking nature of the Israelite slaves. This is why Timothy said...
1Ti 1:9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers, and murderers of mothers, for man-slayers,
Exo_32:9 And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:
Many years later Stephen spoke to the same arrogant, stubborn, rebellious, hate-filled, murderous, religious spirit... before he was martyred.
Act_7:51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.
*** Below are different translations of Gal 3:23 ***
I have only high-lighted the center of the verse to emphasis the purpose of the law.
(KJV) ...we were kept under the law, shut up...
(EMTV) ...we were kept in custody under the law, having been hemmed in...
(ERV) ...the law held us as prisoners. We had no freedom
(ESV) ...we were held captive under the law, imprisoned...
(GW) We were kept under control by Moses' laws...
(ISV) ...we were held in custody and confined under the Law...
The law enacted the role of disciplinarian... in the sense that the penalties of the law minimized the stiff-necked, law-breaking lifestyles of the Israelite slaves.
Why did God want to minimize, keep in check the sinful activity of Israel?
Because history teaches that unrestrained, ravenous, sinful desire devours and destroys nations... Noah's flood wasn't an overnight judgement but rather the long term results of unrestrained sin-filled society that destroyed a world.
Why did God want to preserve Israel?
Well, let's go back to the the tail end of Gal 3:19
Gal 3:19 What purpose then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions...
Tail-end of the verse... till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.
Note two very important points
1) The word "till" conveys the idea of an expiry date
2) The seed - the seed is Jesus
Examples of expiry date
a) Work until 5pm meaning work finishes at 5pm
b) She lived until 50 meaning at the age of 50 she died
c) Coupons are valid until the end of the month meaning at the end of the month the coupons will expire
Gal 3:19 says the Law was given until the seed came.
Therefore when the seed came the Law of Moses expired
Heb 7:12 says the Law was changed
Heb 8:13 says the Law was made obsolete
2 Cor 3:11 says the Law was done away
Why did God want to preserve Israel?
To preserve the seed... just as Levi was in the loins of Abraham - Heb 7:5
The seed of Abraham (Jesus) was in the loins of Israel, Judah, David, etc
Gal 3:19 What was the purpose of the Law?
The Law of Moses provided many benefits to sustain Israel and protect her from satan's legal right to destroy her, and transform a chaotic rabble of slaves into a civilized nation... but the Law of Moses was given to Israel solely for one purpose...
Because of Israel's transgressing nature... The Law was the instrument God used to preserve the DNA from which Christ was born.
Once the seed came, was crucified and arose from the dead... the guidance, tutelage and discipline of the Law was replaced by the ministry of the Holy Spirit - 2 Cor 3:7-11, John 14, 15, 16.
The Law came by Moses but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ - John 1:17
