DRINKING alcohol can cause seven different types of cancer - including cancer of the mouth and throat, liver, colon, bowel and breast.

A study of existing research has revealed evidence there is a direct, harmful impact on the body from drinking - despite the fact scientists remain unsure exactly why alcohol can cause cancer.

Writing in the journal Addiction, Jennie Connor, from the University of Otago in New Zealand, said alcohol is estimated to have caused about half a million deaths from cancer in 2012 alone - 5.8 per cent of cancer deaths worldwide.
