A recent assessment by the Computer Warehouse Group (CWG) Plc has revealed that a higher percentage of Nigerians use the ‘Automated Teller Machines’ (ATMs) compared to their counterparts in Ghana and the United Kingdom (UK).

The Chief Executive Officer of CWG, Mr. James Agada, who spoke at an Editors’ workshop organised by the company in shared the outcome of the assessment and noted that the average ATM in Nigeria dispenses thrice the number of notes in Ghana and 10 times the number of notes in U.K
“By accepted proportion, according to the Central Bank of Nigeria, we should have at least 60,000 ATMs installed but only 15,000 ATMs are available to serve the teeming population. The number of people with ATM cards keeps increasing by the day, despite the shortfall in ATMs and Nigeria still ranks higher in ATM usage,” he said.

Agada, who agreed that ATMs come with some issues, however said these problems are overstated.
“The core issue we have with the ATMs are that we don’t have enough of them and the few around are overwhelmed,” he said.

The CWG boss, who also spoke against the background of ATM related fraud in the country, said it is not peculiar to the Nigeria environment, but a global challenge that is receiving attention from various quarters.

“As far as ATM security is concerned, Nigeria is more secured compared to places like the United States of America or U.K. In Nigeria we have many measures being deployed to curb the problem of ATM-related fraud. We also have PIN-Shield, security cameras, mirrors, encryption technology, anti-phishing devices fixed on the ATM and we are not resting on our oars,” he said.

The ICT expert, who emphasised that no technology is completely impregnable, said: “There’s nowhere you carry out transactions, without the risk of some likely fraudulent potential. You will recall that the Central Bank of Bangladesh was scammed and lost 80million dollars to fraud which has gone untraced till date.”

lol...see display of reasons. Anyway it's because there's a lot of online shopping and transaction in Britain, while Nigeria still does most of its transactions with cash. So instead of Brits to use the cash they withdrew from ATM they pay with their debit or credit card.

Who told you that they can withdraw money at once ??

There are lots of ATM here in UK that only allows withdrawal of 250 GBP at once.

Nigeria should look into adopting Kenya's mobile money model. Only with a simple basic phone and a sim card one is connected to the financial world.....through it one can directly receive transfers such as Moneygram, Western union, Skrill, World remit, Sendwave etc. Withdraw and deposit money into one's bank account. Transfer money to another phone number and the owner cash the money from agents around him.

One can make payment in a store by just sending the amount from their mobile wallet to the store's code at no extra charge to the customer.

Nigeria should wake up.

That's because U.K is a truly cashless society. There are months where an average uk resident will not even see, touch or spend cash as all transactions are electronic and automated.

With the advent of contactless and smartphone payments, the U.K. leads the way with leSs reliance on cash machines.
This is a much cheaper and safer way to spend money.
It also encourages the so called "24 hour" economy

It's simple, the brits use p.o.s machines more than atm's na

The average brit fit get less than 10/20 pounds 4 body for normal cash

Unlike the avg nigerian(like me) wey need wtd enough cash then b4 going to purchase things.

Tho sha p.o.s is beginning to take over.

Ghana pop -20 million
UK pop -61 million
Nigeria pop- 180 million
Nigeria is 6x Ghana and 3x UK.

Any comparison has to factor the pop variation in. I dont think he did that

This is the only sensible post here so far. Nigerians are very backward and some even think that usage of ATM machines signifies civilization. I pity that zoo!

Apart from population and cashless factors, stability and value of the Naira is also a key factor. Nigerians have to withdraw more often because the cash-at-hand is falling in value.

Contact less payment, online shopping/transaction/bank transfers meant poeple are less likely to use Atm card.

Re: ATM Usage Higher In Nigeria Compared To UK - Computer Warehouse Group by Nobody: 12:31pm On Jul 28, 2016
Why Not most UK transactions are cashless be cos they use more of cards and digital money. they don't need to go to ATM. I can for example hold only £10 for a whole week.
