The Last Member Of BO Language Of Andaman Island Is Dead by popesam1(m): 7:53am On Jul 30, 2016 |
The last member of a 65,000-year-old
tribe has died, taking one of the
world’s earliest languages to the
grave.
Boa Sr, who died last week aged
about 85, was the last native of the
Andaman Islands who was fluent in Bo.
Named after the tribe, Bo is one of
the 10 Great Andamanese languages,
which are thought to date back to
the pre-Neolithic period when the
earliest humans walked out of Africa.
Boa Sr's passing on with Andaman
Island's Bo language vindicates
language experts who have been
warning governments and native
speakers against their lackadaisical
attitude to their indigenous
languages. This shows that all the
campaign against Language death or
linguistic extinction is no fluke.
I want to believe that Bo language
is not dead yet. Or did the Late Boa
Sr not have children and grand-
children to whom she bequeathed the
language? May be they, like legions
of Nigerian youths, cannot speak the
language, let alone document same.
The day of reckoning is here for
Andaman Islands, which allowed her
language to go into the grave with
its last fluent speaker. R.I.P. for
both of them.
This is a great lesson for the
upcoming young people of Nigeria.
They should learn to speak and write
their local languages fluently so
that they do not die. 'Mẹ gba, àbó
mi,' please, my people, it is not a
mark of 'civilisation' to adopt
another man's language and culture
and abandon your own for termites to
feast on.
A word is enough for the wise. http://www.naijapopular.com/2016/07/the-last-member-of-bo-language-of.html?m=1 CC: lalasticlala
