The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to Consenjo Superior de Investigaciones Cientifica (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain. Since 2004, the rankling is published twice a year – at the end of January (January Ranking) and at the end of July (July ranking) respectively; covering more than 24,000 Higher Education Institutions Worldwide.

The final ranking for this year has just been published. The ranking is made up of indicators obtained in the month of July in order to maintain freshness.

Recall that the Transparent Ranking of world University was released a few weeks ago (which was posted here last week). That ranking represents the Openness Indicator which accounts for 10% of this July 2016 edition of the Webometrics ranking. This is therefore the overall ranking of all parameters including; Presence, Visibility, Openness and Excellence Indicators.

Presence: refers to the total number of web pages a university has, including rich files (like pdf), according to google. This accounts for 10% of the overall rank.

Impact/Visibility: How visible an institution and its work out-put is on the web. The maximum indicator value obtained from two independent link information providers (ahrefs and majestic) was utilized. The top 20 linking domains and their corresponding backlinks were excluded from the calculation, for reliability. Weight: 50%.

Excellence: Statistics of the top 10% most cited papers by discipline for a five year period of 2010 to 2014. Weight: 30%.

Harvard University (USA) emerged overall tops in the world once again, after outstandingly ranking first in all indicators this time.

University of Capetown (South Africa) maintained top position in Africa but slipped a step backwards in world rank from 332nd to 333rd position.


For Nigerian Universities; University of Ibadan (UI) remained first among the country’s varsities, but also suffered a serious drop in positions of world (from 1296th to 1412th) and continental (from 16th to 19th) ranks respectively.

Covenant University (CU) remained second in Nigeria but rose 258 steps upwards in world rank, finishing 1769th in the world and 25th in Africa.

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) finished third in Nigeria and also did not drop in the ranking. OAU increased in world rank insignificantly from 2119th to 2083rd position.
