Local Competition

SLUSH is currently partnered with Ventures Platform to organize the local competition for tech startups to be part of the 2016 Global Impact Accelerator (GIA) program. Ventures Platform will work with other stakeholders in the tech ecosystem to conduct a pitchathon in order to select the best tech startups to be part of SLUSH 2016 in Helsinki, Finland by 30th November.



What is the Global Impact Accelerator All About?

#Slush16 is Europe’s leading startup and technology event, which connects startups and tech talent with top-tier international investors, executives, and media. In 2015, Slush brought together 15,000 attendees from one hundred nations for the two-day event held in Helsinki, Finland.

Slush Global Impact Accelerator (GIA) is a program created in collaboration with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland and multiple partners globally. The purpose is to create a leading global program to support startups that are looking to solve some of the most pressing global challenges and contributing to the discussion on impact investing.

The GIA program offers startups

1. Online pre-mentoring program for all the selected participants.

2. Helsinki boot camp program on 22nd November – 2nd December.

3. Skills workshops and capacity building with leaders from all around the world.

4. Industry specific matchmaking sessions co-organized with the leading organizations.

5. Access to Slush 2016, investors and potential partners



Selection Criteria

1. Vision to solve pressing challenges globally (A business concept that will have a measurable positive impact on people, society, or planet. There are no limitations in terms of sector or geographical focus.

2. Potential to scale;

3. Skills and drive to succeed;

4. A business idea that has gained some traction, but can still be in an early phase;

5. At least a working prototype;

6. Preferably with the IT focus

7. Can be commercial or non-profit but has to have a scalable business idea

The NCC is sponsoring ICT powered innovations to ITU Telecom World 2016


Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs), entrepreneurs and start-ups are critical to ensuring economic growth in a sustainable and inclusive manner. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Telecom World 2016 is focused on enabling and accelerating these successes by bringing together new ideas, solutions, technology hubs, incubators and important stakeholders from public and private sectors on a uniquely inclusive international platform.

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Telecoms World 2016 is an annual ICT event organised by ITU Telecom and will be held this year in Bangkok, Thailand from November 14th — 17th, 2016. ITU Telecom is a part of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU); the United Nations(UN) agency responsible for Information and Communication Technology(ICT)-related issues.

And the event is looking to bring the smartest ideas and entrepreneurial spirit of digital start-ups and ICT SMEs together with governments, regulators, industry leaders, consultants and experts. All from emerging and developed markets around the world.

Last year’s edition saw Nigerian innovators participate in droves and was won by a Nigerian. Ogbonnaya Bassey came tops with SolarKobo.

On the event registration site, passes cost between $1,000 for a regular pass to an executive pass of $3,000. Excluding airfare visa and ticket costs, all not too expensive considering that participants will get the opportunity to showcase their business to the International community at the Nigeria Pavilion.

But according to a communique issue by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) through Tony Ojobo; Director of Public Affairs of the NCC, the NCC has promised to sponsor the best entries as part of Nigeria’s delegation to ITU Telecom World 2016.

To qualify, send a detailed PowerPoint presentation of your innovation that is driven by ICT and positively impacts the socio-economic development of your community.
