American swimmer Michael Phelps extended his Olympic record further by winning his 21st gold medal. The 31 yr old is the most decorated Olympian of all time and has won more than twice as many gold medals at the Games as the athlete second on the list, former Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina (nine).
