Defensive discipline produces final four:

Defensive solidity was the order of matchday eight at the Olympic Football Tournaments, with the four men’s semi-finalists producing displays based on a solid bedrock. Brazil, Germany, Honduras and Nigeria all kept clean sheets in their respective quarter-finals as Colombia, Portugal, Korea Republic and Denmark could find no way past and exited the competition. FIFA.com recaps the action.

The hosts’ remarkable defensive prowess is something that has gone somewhat under the radar during their difficult Rio 2016 campaign, but Brazil have yet to concede at the tournament, having now kept their opponents out for a remarkable six hours. That statistic is made all the more noteworthy considering Weverton, their goalkeeper throughout the remarkable run, was an 11th-hour call-up as a replacement for the injured Fernando Prass.

Honduras’ own shot-stopper Luis Lopez was the hero in Belo Horizonte, as he produced a string of stunning saves to keep Korea Republic out and help his country to the final four at an Olympics for the first time. Two of his most notable stops saw him keep out a Son Heungmin first-half volley and a close-range Moon Changjin effort after the interval. A swift counter-attacking goal from Los Catrachos saw off the London 2012 bronze medal winners.

Nigeria’s Emmanuel Daniel has two consecutive clean sheets to his name at Rio 2016, after his unbeaten 90 minutes against Sweden in the group stages and having kept out a Danish side who wilted under the African side’s pressure in the second half in Salvador. Germany’s Timo Horn had only slightly more to do against Portugal than in his side’s final group game against Fiji, but he too picked up a second consecutive clean sheet as the Germans romped to victory against the Portuguese in Brasilia.

It is said that, Attackers win you games but Defenders win you Trophies..

Whatever happens on Wednesday, I am proud of this team despite all the challenges that marred their preparation right into the tournament.

Siasia sings Mikel praise, says Chelsea star rolls back 2005 form

Nigeria Olympic team coach Samson Siasia has singled out Chelsea star Mikel Obi for special praise as the team get set for a Rio Olympics semi-final against Germany.

Mikel has shone in Brazil that Siasia said the Chelsea star reminds him of when he inspired the Flying Eagles to reach the final of the 2005 FIFA U20 World Cup in Holland with the midfielder playing a more offensive role that earned him the tournament second best player after Lionel Messi.

The coach was full of appreciation to the entire team after the comfortable 2-0 victory over Denmark in the quarterfinals of the Rio Olympics, but reserved special praise for his captain.

“Coach Siasia has publicly praised the contribution of the team captain Mikel Obi to the success of the team so far,” a top team source informed AfricanFootball.com

“He had a one-on-one with Mikel and thanked him for being there for the team and also his full support for him that has kept him and his team going.”

Siasia said the way Mikel is playing now reminded him of the 2005 Flying Eagles who played in the final of the U20 World Cup in Holland.

He said Mikel has led by example on and off the pitch.

He said a very good example was the Chelsea star’s opening goal against Denmark before he was also involved in the second goal that ousted the Danes from the Olympics in Brazil.

“He said with the leadership role Mikel is playing right now he is very confident that his team would beat Germany in the semi-finals to qualify for the Gold medal match,” added the source.

Nigeria vs Germany Rio 2016 Olympics football preview:
invokes Chelsea and Arsenal Rivalry
as Mikel Obi of Chealsea (Nigeria) is challenged by Serge Gnabry of Arsenal (Germany)

As Nigeria and Germany do battle for a place in the Olympics final there will likely be plenty of interest in London as Chelsea and Arsenal players with a point to prove back home do battle in Sao Paulo.

lets go there..
