ABUJA – Motorists in the Federal Capital Territory,
FCT, especially those plying the Abuja- Keffi express way yesterday decried the abandonment of
major bridge projects expected to ease traffic
gridlock between the city centre and several satellite towns.

They lamented the abandoned bridges saying that
the projects, if completed will not only make movement easier for motorists but also add value to the well-being of residents of Abuja.

A visit to the construction site of the popular AYA
bridge expected to link the city-centre to other parts of the FCT show that work has been suspended. Some motorists who spoke with Nigerian Interest said the recurrent traffic jams that occur along Nyanya, Mararaba, New Nyanya, and Masaka roads, especially in the morning and evening hours of weekdays are caused by the abandoned bridge project.

Dennis Umeh, a commercial motorist who plies
Abuja-Keffi route, called for government attention saying that the Federal Capital Development Authority,
FCDA, should concentrate on completing on-going
abandoned bridge projects before initiating new ones.

“The FCDA should rise to its mandate and complete
abandoned brigdes before beginning fresh ones. Even if there are issues with contractors, they should
resolve it because the masses are becoming more
and more impatient with the government.” He lamented.

Others said the abandoned AYA bridge which links
the city centre with other parts of FCT has turned nightmare for workers who transit to work from
Abuja-Keffi express way because of the traffic
gridlocked experienced along that axis on a daily basis.

They described the abandonment as waste of
public fund since the benefits of the projects are
neither enjoyed by motorists nor residents.

A staff of FCDA, who spoke under anonymity,
identified dwindling revenue of the federal government among reasons some ongoing bridge projects could
not be completed. He however appealed to
motorists to exercise patience
