At least there will be stop for the doctors to be demanding police report before treating gun shot victims, because anybody that does that should be prosecuted. At the other hand police can no longer arrest doctors of harboring or treating armed robbers because this particular statement will be used against them |

I dont trust police no more, it is easy for someone who reported a crime to be arrested and detained. |

The Police have soiled their image already. I believe that no sane Nigerian doctor would heed to this call. |

@Topic I haven't had kids yet but when i do have them, i don't think i'll want them growing up in this jungle country.A lot of times, people are quick to say doctors are heartless but from what i gather, the opposite is the case.If you are a doctor and you treat a gun shot wound without police report, your career and maybe you life is bye bye.If you don't, you will be harassed or even beaten up.Something like this happened in festac years ago (Ituah hospital in 512 Ave).A young man was brought in by his friends for treatment, the docs and nurses demanded police report and registration of hospital card. They couldn't meet up with either and at the end, the boy died. The dead guys friends beat the living daylights out of that doctor and even stapped him before they left.Pitiful.The funny thing is, if the hospital had treated the guy without anything, the following would have happened : (1)The police would have a field day with the hospital (2)The doctor would definitely lose his job, probably his license and if care is not taken, he could go to jail (3)The hospital itself could lose credibility as other rival hospitals could take up the issue and report them as being incompetent to administer medical practice At the end of it all, those people who the doctor helped wouldn't even pretend to recognise the troubled doctor when they see him hunting for job on the street. Human beings and their selfishness.Pitiful. God save us. |

I lost my father to this dumb ass policy. He was alive for over three hours after getting shot. My friends/neighbors drove him to 2 different hospitals and no one would treat him. Reading this thread just makes me wanna blow something or someone up. Who is the police supposed to protect? Armed robbers walked into my father's home and shot him with a shotgun. He was barely conscious, but people trying to save him are supposed to find a police station before a hospital? What is so sad is that money wasn't even as issue. . .if he had survived anyone that helped would have been well rewarded. This happened in 1999. I doubt anything has changed since then. |

More about NPF, i don't think it's them that have the issue.I think it's us blacks that have issues.NOTHING SEEMS TO WORK FOR US. We have all the resources to turn this country around in less than two years and yet, we are worse than india who have nothing.Even Singapore that was "resource-less" years ago are the world's largest exporter of palm oil products today. And these same people came down here to get their palm fruits to plant. We have everything : Money, resources, man power, brains, all the works but still, nothing works.I keep asking myself day by day, WHAT IS WRONG WITH AFRICANS! |

Krayola: Sorry about your loss, may his soul rest in peace BUT I don't think there's any policy like that in the first place!! MEDICAL DOCTORS ARE MEANT TO BE EDUCATED PEOPLE!! IF POLICE ARE ARRESTING YOU FOR TREATING PATIENTS WHY NOT SUE THEM WITH THE HELP OF THE MEDICAL COUNCIL SO THE CASE WILL BE SOLVED ONCE AND FOR ALL?!?!?!? IF IT IS TO GO ON STRIKE FOR SALARY INCREASE THEY WILL GLADLY DO THAT ON A NATIONAL SCALE BUT TO FIGHT LEGALLY FOR SOME INVINCIBLE POLICY THEY WONT!!! |
Re: Police IG Asks Doctors To Treat Accident/Gunshot Victims First by Outstrip(f): 5:13pm On Sep 29, 2009 |
Dis Guy: This is exactly my point. Even the educated ones prefer to act like illiterates so they do not have to fight the fight. If it was never a law in the first place then why were doctors falling for it. The way things work in Nigeria is hard to understand |
Re: Police IG Asks Doctors To Treat Accident/Gunshot Victims First by adrusa: 5:36pm On Sep 29, 2009 |
What the doctors are doing is called self-preservation. Sadly in this country today, the police is often the accuser and the prosecutor and with their modus operandi of torturing people until they are ready to confess that Anini was their mentor, no one stand the chance. Police harass people on the road asking for all sorts of funny papers, how come none of our hyperactive lawyers have taken them to court. By the time the police arrests you and presents loads of contrived "evidence" your wife will deny you. |
Re: Police IG Asks Doctors To Treat Accident/Gunshot Victims First by Outstrip(f): 6:59pm On Sep 29, 2009 |
Okay adrusa since this happened I have been searching online to see if I could find 5 cases in Nigeria where doctors have mobilized to have questions answered as to why they should let people die because they have gunshot wounds and I was not able to find it. Then I thought maybe something as simple as the doctor themselves walking to the neighborhood police station and asking if this would be a problem or even speaking to the person in charge to see if they consider this a problem and I found none. I mean there are ways to force people to say things. My can't they push hard enough till the police come out with a statement on TV that clearly says that any police officer that arrests a health care worker for treating a gunshot victim is a criminal. It should only be an issue if a gunshot victim is treated and the doctor failed to report it to the police. The police still have to go out there and do their job not expect you to do their job for them by coming to the station and write a statement. What sort of madness is that. |

Outstrip: It's a mad country everyone push their responsibilty to others It's about time patients start suing doctors for negligence and manslaughter!! its only in nigeria hospitals will ask you for money before asking about your health the hospitals should start billing the government for patients that cant pay for treatment through the national health insurance scheme or other funds |

I am seriously getting concerned about the media attitude of the present IG. I have a lot of respect for Onovo and I believe he has had some raw deals before making the top cop position. Public expectations are also high on this guy percieved in some quarters as a man of honor. He is also the first South Eastern guy to attain the IG position since independence (?) and came on board the polity at an uneasy time. However, he needs a serious training on media and public relations, or the services of a sound media relations adviser. He may mean well, but the signal he sends out hardly inspire confidence. His "Ribadu-Never-Entered-The-Country" statements and this offhand approval on Medical Treatment for gunshot victims could have been handled better. On the latter issue, one would have expected a press conference, followed by a circular from his office, published in the national dailies, stating the police position on the topic clearly. A copy of such should be sent to the Nigerian Medical Association secretariat (and other relevant bodies), thus disseminating the information officially & effectively. I cant imagine the trauma of being paraded with captured armed robbers simply for trying to save lives! |

The foolish police authorities saying this should propose a law that will back this up cos in my view, Doctors are only trying to protect their career and their Medical License from being revoked. |

WARNING- Many times, patients are rejected not only because of the police report issue but because most private hospitals do not have the manpower to handle serious emergencies like that at any hour of the day. Depending on where the person is shot he may require specialty surgeons like a neurosurgeon,a cardiothoracic surgeon,a maxillofacial surgeons ,a senior anaesthetist and a well equiped blood bank, if he or she is to survive. I can assure you even big private hospitals like Lagoon, Eko hospital and Reddinngton, in lagos do not have these people readily available. In the whole of Lagos you have less than 5 practicing cardiothoracic surgeons and 3 practicing neurosurgeons. These guys all owe their first allegience to teaching hopsitals. MY CANDID ADVICE is if someone you know is shot get the person to a teaching hospital or big general hospital as soon as possible, your chances of survival are best there cos of the large concentration of specialist. I am talking from expirience both as a doctor and someone who has had two relations shot, one in the face and the other was sprayed with bullets all over- Both are alive today. The first was taken to a teaching hospital, the second to a big private hospital and the doctors on call were to junior to do anything. Luckily I was around so was able to oversee things to the best of my ability and get advice from collegues in that specialty. |
