As if it's NOT a university:
___
Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto is known to be the most peaceful university in the country (as its students prescribe it). It is situated in the eastern part of Sokoto. It has its permanent site located in the bush. If I say bush, I mean bush. Because from UDUS, one can only make a halt, no way to any urban area, rather villages and clans. This is the basis of the neglect. I guess.

Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto was one of the four universities created barely 40 years ago in order to promote the standard of education in the country. It graduated lots of students in different professions; professors, ambassadors, governors, senators, teachers, judges, security officers, etcetera. The current INEC chairman is also an alumnus of UDUS.

But one thing that irritates whoever knows UDUS is the fact that the university is facing a serious neglect especially on the aspect of roads connecting it's departments and faculties and the main road that connects it to town.

Barely four years or so, one of its main bridges got crashed after a serious flood that consumed lives, farms and properties worth millions of Naira. An incident that caused a lot of hardship on the students cum lecturers' side. Before one could reach the university then, he or she was expected to spent a minimum of 30 kilometres instead of the originally 8 or 10 kilometres. The then President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan came to Sokoto and sympathised with those who suffered water flood. After some months, the only bridge that got crashed was reconstructed. Instead of the government to look at all the bridges therein and if possible even extend its kind gesture to reconstruct the road which was full of dilapidation and patches, it ended constructing only the affected one with the others nearly collapsing. Perhaps, till other time.

Now, another bridge has collapsed this evening. Thank God it didn't cause any accident but it nearly did. Students likewise lecturers are left to their (mis)fortune of either going by boat, or following the 30 kilometres way. What I'm afraid of is missing exams as UDUS is presently taking its 2nd Semester exams. I also heard that that bus fare also increased to N100 instead of the known N40. This is NOT fair. Since the University/Government caused the accident due to its negligence, then it should take the consequences.

Not far back that the University held its Convocation Ceremony which marked its 40th Anniversary. Big men from all over the country attended and showed their solidarity and support and some donated cash and carried their 'free' doctorate degree and went back to their normal businesses. They all went through the old road but none care to rehabilitate it.

It is important to note that; with a good road, one can reach UDUS in ten minutes or less, but without, 30 minutes can only be managed.

We call on all the stake holders and those in authority to intervene.
