The Core Different Between FEMINISM And GENDER EQUALITY by sunnymornin1(m): 1:04pm On Aug 23, 2016 |
Is Feminism the same as gender equality? Most feminists says that anyone that champion for gender equality is a feminist but I want to disagree. Not everyone who clamour or believe in gender equality is a feminist. Feminism as a movement addresses the social issues of women that assumes that men's position is privileged and oppressing towards woman in all instances. Gender equality is one of the said goals of feminism, in which all women come to be as privileged as men. There are feminists who don't believe in gender equality and there are those who fight for gender equality who also don't believe in feminism movement. These two sets of people can't be lump in the same bracket. Seeking gender equality is a general goal that only really has one fundamental - whilst seeking it, you wish to create a world in which gender is not treated as important in a field where it theoretically isn’t. Feminism is one approach to that. Unfortunately, most of the people who represent the movement in our social media today have taken to the habit of expressing that “if you believe in equality, you are a feminist”, which in essence is the act of hijacking a highly general ideal in order to give feminism power. When people who fight for gender equality say they aren’t feminists, they often mean they don’t agree with the practices of most feminists today, AND they don’t personally believe that their methods or ideas will effectively create gender equality. To ignore these people explanation and stand and immediately cry, “Misogynist!”, is to be a whiny child who stands in the way of adults trying to get things done. Feminism is one movement towards gender equality - not the only one. Gender equality is just an ideal that anyone can work towards in any way. -Edward Ezekiel Onoriode |
