Facebook, in its quest to provide easy, fast and affordable access to internet connectivity around the world launched its Opencellular few weeks back and just recently the Social networking giant also announced the restarting of its free basics services in India by launching Express Wi-Fi.

The Express Wi-Fi initiative will see Facebook partnering with internet service providers (ISPs) to deliver fast, affordable and express data while Facebook offers the ISPs software to cushion the cost of the data and help them sell with a 15 percent commission on each data sold. On the other hand, the ISPs will work at ensuring that they provide infrastructure required to support basic connectivity in rural areas using public Wi-Fi.

After a successful launch of the Express Wi-Fi in India, Facebook has decided to spread its tentacles to Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa. Facebook has entered into partnership with a Nigerian ISP Cool Link- Providers of Yah Sat (Yahclick) a VSAT technology in Nigeria.

The Express Wi-Fi will be launched in Lagos and the Express Wi-Fi hotspot service will run a service speed of 10Mbps and users in Lagos will enjoy a 14-day free trial for the service with daily usage at 100 megabyte. The Express Wi-Fi service plan ranges from as low as N40 for 100Mbps daily to 5GB for a fee of N1,600 monthly.

Facebook presently runs free basics with Airtel Nigeria network providing free internet access to basic web services such as Facebook, Wikipedia at no cost.
