Uber ends

I support the Lagos govt.

Uber breaks regulations and avoids paying taxes all over the world and makes its money by exploiting and under paying its drivers.

Uber has no future because its business model of exploiting its drivers who happen to be the backbone of its business is flawed and this would be their down fall.

I give Uber maximum 3 years before it implodes and disappears.
Don't hold your breath, because it aren't happening, Uber only leaves a city if there is money to be made in that city.

As for exploitation, no one is forced to work for Uber and for God's sake, it is a partime job...it is myopic and short-sighted to think that, you can get rich by driving for uber.

The last time I was in Lagos, I used uber when convenient. I got talking with one of my driver, a very young boy, who just finished secondary school waiting to get into the Uni, we talked at length, I was surprise to learn that this young guy makes about N300k/month driving for Uber, now tell me...how many experienced graduate workers with even 10years on the job makes that kind of money? I guess you might summise that, this young guy is being exploited.

Breakdown of his earnings: on a worst day, he makes about 10 trips@ average N3k (he easily make 15 trips, especially in the night) and works for 20-25 days a week for a total of N600k to N750k...settles the owner of the car 50%.

Dont say what you have no idea about.

Uber offers quality service. From airport to otedola estate, i paid 4500 after haggling. Same distance last week with uber was 1600...better car with no arguement.

Drivers also earn well on uber. Infact uber does not pay any driver. Its all based on the agreement between the driver and the partner. I know one that gets over 100k a month with 20% as his fee. So get your facts right on exploiting drivers.

Lagos Taxi Franchise PROS & CONS

Pros
1: They are everywhere and can go anywhere if you can afford the charges

Cons
1: Free-pricing : Taxi drivers can charge you whatever they feel like depending on how much they think you can afford or how desperate you are
2: They often drive around in circles if you are not familiar with the environs and charge you extra for that - they have been driving for 20 years in Lagos and do not know their way to the National Stadium
3: They often carry Charms and Juju Objects on their person in the event you have any disagreement, they will just slap you with black ring KPAOW!!
4: They are all members of the dreaded NURTW replete with aging ibadan-cheek scratch tribal marks.. wicked sons of bitches
5: They have dirty seats and dirty seat belts that dirty your shirts when you are going for Interviews
6: They refuse to turn on their Air-conditioner because they don't have enough fuel
7: They play Fuji and Juju Music without any respect of your presence.
8: They are always chewing local firewood chewing stick instead of brushing their mouths
9: When it rains they never close up the windows completely and you get soaked in addition they put your life at Risk

Boss .

Please find Uber fares breakdown below
The trip fare you see at the end of a ride is calculated by adding:
- base fare: the price for pickup
- time: from start to end of trip
- distance: miles or kilometers of route
- surge pricing (if applicable)
- tolls (if applicable)
This amount is charged to the rider.

Your payment for the trip is calculated as: ((base fare + time rate + distance rate) * surge multiplier)) - Uber fee + tolls .

Lagos Rate. N400 base fare + N90/km + N9/minute (N400 minimum fare/N1000 Cancellation fee).

This means that you are not paying much when in traffic.

The truth is that Uber has taken advantage of a system like Nigeria where anything goes .. they know that the unemployment rate here is so high and has has provided hustling opportunities for lagosians, even though this is not a proper job with medical, insurance and all that but at least it pits food on the table for the man on the street. i feel so sad when interviewing drivers at times as a partner , there are lots of graduates and foreign masters holders looking for a car to drive on the platform.
ou will find graduates of convenant university, Unilag, london masters holder all tryiun

Why should a fan his owner pay N10k to operate a single cab in the city...and Uber pay zero? As it is now...Uber adds zero to the city.....let them build their own roads or pay up. It wold be unfair to registered taxi drivers. Good move.

You just made my point, Uber driver cannot be making any money if Uber is charging 30% of the going rate, yet they will still take a 20 percent of their driver's peanuts pay.

Of course nobody is forced to work for slave wages, but some people do not have many options. The person you say is earning 100,000 per month, you would be surprised that after all his expenses, such as fuel, insurance etc are taken out, may barely clear #20,000 per month

Uber is the proverbial cat with nine lives! They have survived in the US and many western countries despite the fierce attack from the statuesque because of their tenacity and the company is very good at arm twisting.

Previously, Newark NJ ban Uber from the Newark International Airport, NJ USA which is a lucrative hop for passengers. In fact Uber drivers were arrested and some posted their horrible experience on YouTube, not long after the local Taxi Union celebrated a new milestone, the signing of a deal in the city that meant a death nail to Uber. Then the State sponsored a bill to ensure the burial will be a foregone conclusion.

Then Uber spring into action, sensing the big money to be made...they started paying the fines of any Uber driver that got a ticket, just send them the picture of the ticket and the prove that you have paid it and viola you got your money back!

They then brought in some mouth watering deal that the city can just resist and viola! Newark International Airport is a second parking lot for Uber drivers waiting to pick passengers.

As for that state law? Well, it has been drastically watered down. Now some in the local taxi union sensing the loosing battle have upgraded the look of their taxi and have signed up with Uber and now carrying GPS and working for Uber...intact, most TLC cab drivers in New York City are Uber drivers as well.

Über has perfected this strategy and rolls it out in any city with potentials to make them money. Bottomline, these laws will not make Uber to leave as long as there is money to be made, if anything they will affect the local cab services that does not have the financial might of an international company first, before they start affecting Uber.

Secondly, the demography that used Uber in Nigeria are influential after all if one can choose to pay N3,500 for a trip that would have cost just N150, they are not push overs. Lagos, just need money, and Uber will give them a deal that they will not refuse, my fears is...the local cab company which this new law is purported to help...will not be fully represented at the meeting, when that deal is made.
Bro.You really do undestand the system

Lagos state ought to encourage this scheme and not to kill it. Because killing it, would mean a lot of people would be out of work and this will further worsen the unemployment rate in Lagos.

very well said..... uber is strong and by fact and figures, the numbers of cars coming on the uber platform each day is so overwhelming. lagos state wants money. uber will give an offer, a mouth watering one . but the case is that uber now has become a threat to normal taxi drivers, even philly and moll(metro taxi) are striving hard to survive, and the truth is most of all this guys in power have luxurious cars on the uber platform.... uber has come stay. its a won battle already. soon you wont hear of the story again.

Like i said earlier, dont comment on what u know little of.

The over 100k is his own take home. I know this because he drives for me. Asides uber fees, fuel and other expense, i still get an average 60k per week and he hardly works weekend. This was before the summer holidays though.
