Leicester City fans might be forgiven for feeling as high as a G6 plane following the club's signing of then 31-year-old Gorkan Inler from Napoli for £5 million in 2015, which at the time was considered a bargain judging from the Swiss Captain's rich form over the years for the likes of FC Zurich, Udinese and Napoli.


Leicester City at the same time signed an unknown N'Golo Kante from Caen for £4 million but this signing was merely seen as big gamble. The two defensive midfielders started the season on the bench as they were given time to adapt to the fast paced English Premier League, language and weather change, meaning Andy King was preferred to partner attacking midfielder Danny Drinkwater. Things did stay that way until Kante displaced King in the starting line-up with Inler rotting in the bench .

Gradually, Kante grew in confidence and blossomed going on to become indispensable for the Midlands club, ending up being nominated in the Premier League Team of the Year together with team mates Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy as Leicester City cruised to the title in May.

Now 32, it is not shocking that Inler's game has dropped, rather what is shocking is how his form has dipped so low in such a short time . Inler in total has played 417 league games in Switzerland and Italy scoring 28 goals in the process. The Swiss player spent eight years in Italy winning the Coppa Italia twice with Napoli. On the international level, Inler appeared 89 times for the Swiss national team also appearing in two FIFA World Cup's (2010 and 2014) and one European Competition (2008) on home soil.

It is difficult to define the midfielder's game pattern considering his greatest strengths includes good passing , stamina , movement off the ball, accurate long range shoot and vision to mention but a few. Although Inler is a hard tackling midfielder who loves to tackle, on the other-hand he losses out on most of his tackles, and this is the reason he wasn't a success in Leicester City, coupled with his slow pace which made him a passenger in the five league appearances he made, unlike Kante who was able to dictate the pace and tempo of the game he played, often playing as a strong shield for the defence .


Inler's problems last summer did not end there as he was stripped of the Swiss national team captaincy, failing to make the final squad for the Euro's in France. To regain his lost spot the Swiss defensive midfielder has quickly moved to Besiktas on deadline day, given he is of Turkish descent . However it might be safe to say that despite his form struggles, Gorkan Inler should not be written off as with regular game time he might come back to his lost form. For now , Inler departs Leicester a flop having arrived as a coup signing .
