Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka overcame world number one Novak Djokovic 6-7(1-7),6-4,7-5,6-3 to win this year's US Open men's singles event. It was Wawrinka's first US Open title and third Grand Slam victory. He won the Australian Open in 2014 and last year's French Open title.
The Swiss, 31, becomes the oldest male winner of the US Open since 35-year-old Ken Rosewall in 1970.
Similarly, the women's singles event of the US Open was won by Germany's Angelique Kerber who defeated Czech Karolina Pliskova on Saturday to claim her 2nd Grand Slam title of 2016. The new world number one had usurped Serena Williams as the game's top seeded player heading into the final match and had beaten Serena to the Australian Open final early this year.
