One of the most difficult things to handle in life is success and fame, and once more this week, there was an incident in the press that shows that we cannot be too careful about how we live our lives. England's latest football manager, a gentleman by the name of Sam Allardyce had a very rough experience we need to learn from this week.

This 61 year old football manager has given 46 years of his life to football. First as a football player for 21 years and the in management for about 25 years. He has genuinely had a very good career as a Premier league football manager and had many success stories. He constantly lead clubs into promotion and his last club was saved from relegation under his management. He is a good manager and in recognition of that, was appointed as the manager for the English national team in July 2016.

Mr Allardyce has on more than one occasion mentioned that this England job was his dream job and he was being paid £3M per annum to do this job he always loved and aspired to do. He had arrived at the place he always dreamt of! I can imagine his joy when he got the job and remember all the smiles from this gentleman in July. He planned to succeed at this dream job too but something quite unrelated to the performance of the team caused him to loose the £3M a year job this week. He was fired; but why? He had only had a chance to lead his team in one game and they won; surely he should not be fired for being tricked into an interview?

Well, unbeknown to Mr Allardyce, he met with an undercover reporter and negotiated a deal for £400,000 on the side to make himself available to avoid some football association rules. On this supposed social outing, he said a few careless words and these words clearly being filmed undercover showed him being willing to cut a deal which tarnished his image after being in a career path for 46 years! How can one careless interview and behavior, one set of words in a non threatening environment lead to the loss of £6m which is £3m per annum for an initial 2 years contract?! That was surely a very expensive social outing! The worse of it is his reputation and name which have now been tarnished over one careless conversation. What happened to Mr Allardyce reminds me of the scripture that says:-

'So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you do not fall.' 1 Corinthians 10:12

One can never be too careful in life, in fact, the more your blessings and the higher you go in life, the more you need to be careful as the devil is truly looking around, going to and fro, looking for who to devour and disgrace!

Sam Allardyce worked so hard, built his career and reputation, only for one careless action to lead to him becoming a front page ridicule in the whole country. His story can no longer be written without this event defining him; beyond the victories, successes and the years he has spent building himself and his name.

No matter what you do and where you are in life, always be careful with your words, your walk and your ways.
