The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Yesterday staged a protest which caused the management of University of Lagos (UNILAG) to order the closure of the school’s main entrance.

The protest it was said, was staged to fight the suspension of the school’s union leaders.

Recall that the student union leaders had in April protested students’ poor living conditions (poor electricity, water scarcity and fuel scarcity — which made it burdensome for those who lived off campus to transport themselves to school) and that protest saw the destruction of so many school properties, hence causing the School Authorities to retrogressively act by making the students sign an indemifier form endorsed by their Parents to be of their best behaviour and also limiting the basic amenities they had enjoyed earlier (for example electricity was supplied from 7pm till 7am), a source said.

The students saw the protest staged yesterday as a way of showing affinity to their colleagues who were rusticated for protesting against the management’s inability to provide their basic amenities.

The students, displeased with the decision taken concerning their leaders, stormed the school, insisting on a painstaking investigation of the suspension.

The suspension spans from two to four semesters as a punishment for their participation in the protest.

The second semester exams are close at hand, and Students would be hopeful that this does not cause another indefinite breakdown of school activities
