Public primary and secondary schools in Bayelsa have yet to resume for the 2016/2017 session because of the failure of the state government to settle their seven months salary arrears.

The teachers embarked on a strike at the end of the 2015/2016 long vacation which ended in the first week of September.

The Bayelsa chapter of Nigeria Union of Teachers in a statement on Monday advised teachers to stay at home till their demands were met.

The union said the industrial action became inevitable after the expiration of its 21-day ultimatum to the government on Sept. 19.

In a statement signed by the state Chairman of NUT, Mr. Kalaama Toinpre, and Secretary, Mr. Johnson Hector, the teachers condemned alleged efforts to factionalise the union.

The union said it remained the legally recognised body charged with the responsibility of agitating for the welfare of primary and secondary school teachers.

The union expressed regret that the government had reneged on an earlier agreement reached in May to pay half salaries to its workers pending improvements in the finances of the state.

It said that the state government had only paid teachers their January salary in full and half salary in February, thereby leaving arrears of seven months. .

The state Commissioner for Education, Mr. Markson Fefegha, said the government had been meeting with the teachers to resolve the issues raised by the teachers.

He said, “We have been meeting with the executive of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, I have been explaining to them our efforts so far in meeting our salary obligations.”

It pains me when I see a state like bayelsa, which is meant to be our own Dubai in poverty. Party aside, their governor needs an invitation from efcc while oil prices were 140,he did not save

These south south governors are very wicked. Imagine BAYELSA with just 8 local governments can't pay their workers salary despite their 13% oil derivation.

Chae! Chae!! Chae!!! Daris God oooo, despite the huge allocation going into the state's coffer every year, the second largest receiver of federal allocation after akwa ibom,no meaningful facilities to point to, no good roads, no employment, a state with a population far less than that of the smallest local government area in Lagos. EFCC, over to you!

Bayelsa a typical example of a failed state from azikoro Village to Akenfa to igbogene to agudama u don't have to look far to see d effects of large scale corruption and sheer wickedness on d part of all its past and present leaders. With all d billions d state has received since inception it's still a glorified village where u see monkey bridges springing up during rainy season. Where a part of d capital is still has a very thick forest. At times I wonder how d people that have ruled and still ruling d state manage to sleep at night with poverty and under development being so ubiquitous. As an indigene of d state always feel dejected whenever I have to visit. I just noticed that work has started again on Dat small bridge from. Igbogene junction leading to okoloibiri this is a bridge that has been under construction for d past 5 years and not up to a kilometer. I think d governor should come down here to Awka and see what governance is all about.
