There’s a general misconception that consuming sugar automatically means diabetes in the future. It doesn’t quite work that way. It is more complicated than that.

The pancreas is a organ located on the left side of the abdomen. This organ is responsible for producing insulin, which regulates sugar levels by converting sugar (glucose) to energy for use by the body.

There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes: This is when for some reason, the pancreas stops producing insulin and as a result, sugar fails to be converted to energy, causing it’s high levels in the blood, which is potentially very dangerous. This type of diabetes is usually genetic.

Type 2 Diabetes:In this case, the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin or the body does not properly utilize insulin anymore (also known as insulin resistance.) This used to be usually seen in people over 40 years of age, but recently, younger people are now being diagnosed of this type of diabetes.

However, research has shown that excessive sugar in the liver, triggers a protein; Carbohydrate-Responsive Element-Binding Protein (ChREBP), which causes the body to keep producing high levels of glucose, despite insulin’s efforts at trying to make it stop. This in turn, can subsequently trigger Type 2 Diabetes.

That being said, sugar intake should be cut down, especially in the form of fructose, which can be found in sodas and processed foods. Even if one does not become diabetic, excessive sugar consumption puts them at risk of obesity, heart diseases, high blood pressure, and even kidney problems.

Despite the fact that sugar is sweet, it is not a very good thing. Even in its natural form from the food we eat, sugar should be taken in moderation. We are what we eat.
