baum1: What is the quality of Naija made 1st class graduate when compared to the foreign ones. I read a news on BBC today about the productivity of graduates all over the world. Which country really has the cleverest students? - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-37649892 |

baum1: Let me laugh in swahili before I respond... jajajajajajajajajaja U said it all though... The keyword is...... "wait for it" .......... Engineering Research "Facility"... we dont even have a standard (one that will not crash today and be resurrected 2moro) database of the number of students in d school ... ur talking of research ... well thats the reason why we cant compare ... my mama was flogging my brother koboko when he was schooling here in Nigeria... because she felt he wasn't applying himself ... as he reach "A-Foreign" ... come see straight A's nah... Presidential list... Nominated for Who is who among African students... awards anyhow ..anyhow .. "left, right, center"... So my broda... "he got it here, he cant get it there" ... e dey work oooo... even with their grading systems and all.... thank u Enjoy the remainder of ur day sir..... |

4Play: Guy, I disagree with you on the highlighted. You are making a generalization, What makes you think the student getting a first class from a foreign university is not of the same quality as or higher than the student getting a first class from OAU or from any of the Nigerian university? That is an important first question. If I go by your statement, I would conclude that when these Nigerian first class guys/ladies go abroad for studies, they are usually the best, not among the best oo, in their various classes. Whilst I agree that Nigerians can and do perform at a top level in their various courses abroad, they do not always outshine their counterparts from the Oyinbo schools. If this is true from data, then don't you think you need to rethink your submission? About grade inflation, it's everywhere. In the days we went to school, first class was somewhat of a rarity, in fact the best in my cohort and other cohorts was a 2:1...Today, those same departments are producing at least 3 first class degrees and 2:1 is slowing becoming the average. In fact, if you check graduating data from NUC and all, you would see that the number of first class degrees as a whole in Nigeria has increased by nearly 100% in the past 20 years or so while 2:1 has increased by 65% or so. This is real, this is the reality. Similar conclusions have been reached in the US and UK. Those grades, while impressive, are not as they used to be anymore in Nigeria. Supply has increased!! Can't believe I wrote this about 1st and 2:1, but sadly it's the fact. Grade inflation is not a thing of the west. It's everywhere! If you have a strong point to refute what I have written, I am open to our wisdom. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Maximus85: Funny how people come across same stuff. I read this same article yesterday or so..They say Australians are topping.. It's hard to answer your question because I have heard and seen instances where Africans like Nigerians, Ghanaians, Cameroonians etc top a whole department or even a whole school. But there are also many instances where the Nigerians and co are just among the best performing students, not the top. The question you have asked is an empirical question and to answer it, one must get data of performances of students across top universities..But the point I am trying to drum lol into fellow bros and sis here is that they cannot conclude that a first from abroad is inferior to first in Nigeria. That would be a weak and hasty generalization. This conclusion would only be accepted if the Nigerian first class students have consistently outperformed all of their foreign peers at the foreign schools. Whilst I accept that this happens sometimes and our brothers and sisters are truly doing great things out there, it's hardly the norm..Far from it..Getting a top grade is not easy anywhere |

Ighohor: Guy, na wah oo. It's hard to say something like this because it can't be the fact. Yes, imperial is a top school for engineering and we all respect our above brother's achievement, but it is unbelievable to conclude that a first from imperial even Harvard is way above a first from any African university. We have seen instances where in a class of students or student researchers, the most promising researcher or student is African - Ghana, Nigeria, etc. Many of us have also seen instances where Africans are not tops in their foreign classes... |

Sadly the brilliant ones here get frustrated and guess what happens "Brain drain" most of my friends are developers overseas I was once one but came back but now beginning to re-think why . we should be worried about losing our best brains. |

Reski: Guy, I don't know of most, but many indeed struggle. You have said what I was avoiding to say. Many of the exceptional or very good ones and some of the average but determined ones from Nigeria though will eventually do well irrespective of the initial setback. But those who think it's a piece of cake, mhen e no go easy. What our universities in Nigeria teach us is rigour. We're rigorous students and this trait comes in handy when things get tough. |
