Misplaced priorities, very few Architects are able to provide original design solutions, those we have for green and sustainable Architecture are still not satisfactory and we are here talking about smart buildings.
We need innovative solutions for conservative home designs so the rich and the poor can have decent shelter.

...but does your government provide you constant electricity and your telecomm companies provide you fibre optic level data speed?
apart from the use of generator sets, they're other sustainable alternatives to power.

So far, I done know what the government has really provided for the people, so waiting of them will definitely be a wild goose chase.

I'm still a lover of natural, brilliant designs that blend well with the environment without depending on technology that might just disappear someday. It scares me to think what will happen if all these smart devices were hit by an EMP. Suddenly our houses become too useless and we suffer massive withdrawal due to our dependence on technology. We are not getting very productive with our current applications of technology. We need to make these technologies more human. Suddenly your house cannot maximize natural light, air, space, and stops being environmentally friendly because these smart systems got dysfunctional? Scary.

All these things will remain a pipe dream unless African cities get their priorities right.

To be able to build smart cities you need to ensure that the following structures are put into place, first:

1). Uninterrupted & affordable Electricity/power 24x7 that does not blink in all nooks and crannies of such cities;

2). High-speed broadband effective fibre-to-home networks that will not be cut or disrupted by any 3rd parties.

Proper drainage systems

after living in the smart home, you come out and walk on the potopoto smeared pot hole riddled roads with manual open stagnant gutters. whats the sense in it. African cities need a lot of work or else those smart homes of yours will remain 'the future'.

The essence of smart buildings is not just to adopt the use of technology in our homes and offices. Energy conservation and management is key to having a smart building in this age and time.
The advantages are numerous. From remotely accessing and monitoring all electronic gadgets to regulating moisture contents of your bathroom to avoid home accidents, monitoring your smoke alarm devices in the event of fire outbreak.
The possibilities are unlimited.
Good as it might sound, there are numerous obstacles ahead and limits the adoption of this technology. Some of these include adopting a uniform standard protocol for which devices and gadgets can effectively communicate.

A family contracted a tech company to refitting their home architecture. From remote gates to electrical lightning and CCTV. A month later, they bought a new Samsung smart TV and tried to hook up to the already existing setup, only to find out that the app controlling the automated house were incompatible.
Same goes for the smoke detector. At the moment most companies employ proprietary hardware and software for these technologies which on the long run is expensive for the owner.
Smart building is here to stay in Nigeria.

Naaaa, Nigeria isn't ready for this. We can't even monitor and manage energy consumpt TGion in buildings talk more smart buildings ...

The energy is not even there. It is just there wasting away, with no concerted efforts and knowledge to tap into it efficiently.

One thing I wouldn't want Africans to imitate in building is the way the west build like boxes(apartments,back to back and semidetached),with neither space nor privacy for supposed house owners.. People shouldn't be boxed up together in uniform and close knit structures as if they are in prisons.

Bros, our people are already doing that one, oh! All those structures you call "apartments,back to back and semidetached," don boku for Lagos. Each time I see them, I wonder what happened to the airy African courtyard concept, that typified most of the homesteads in our towns & villages in the past.

Go to most of the new housing estates springing up in Lagos these days, and you see box-like structures with tiny rooms that can hardly take a 6x4 bed. sad Most of them are being put up as terrace buildings, and the few semi-detached buildings that have some semblance of external parking space cannot even take two cars with enough room to spare. By the time they squeeze in the generator house & security guard chalet, what is left? And when you hear the horrific price tags they place on those space-challenged properties, you go run! undecided

The world we live on is rapidly changing. Note and more people rapidly craving for resources that are rapidly been depleted. If every African decides to have such buildings, it's only a matter of time before we would turn on ourselves. Such buildings can only be acquired by the rich and classy of the society.
For a sustainable future, we need to quickly innovate and develop building technologies that can sustain us.

Hi

Brilliant contribution from everyone, i will like to say that the major infrastructure required for an automated or
smart/intelligent building is:
* An internet services
* A smart phone/device
With the introduction of the internet into the building process known as Building Internet Of Things(BIOT),
making your building smart/intelligent is now less expensive and easy to do. Power in the other hand is not
really an issue in running a smart home, because an average Nigerian has access to an alternative power
supply. Recently the internet market has being flooded with several providers that has made it super competitive,
to a large extend internet speed is becoming stable in Nigeria.
Here is a paradox of smart/intelligent building in Nigeria:
* There are smart/intelligent buildings in Nigeria
* Most state in Nigeria are already laying pipe for optical fiber cabling that will enhance better user experiences.

Note: you can make both you existing or new building smart/intelligent, building a smart building does not have to be expensive, it all draws down to the problem you wish to solve.

To learn more on how to make your building smart/intelligent, thereby promoting healthy living, eliminating excessive stress
and worries. Speak to a Building Internet Of Things(BOIT) Facilitator that will walk you through they entire process ensuring you achieve
your desire result......

You forgot to add stable, constant electricity supply that is available 24x7 and does not fluctuate. All those switches, modems & devices through which the internet gets connected to your appliances, need to be powered by electricity. And before you start talking about alternative power supply systems like generators, solar power etc., please be aware that the Nigerian environment is peculiar. cheesy

Generator uptime is dependent on diesel availability and functional machinery (i.e. the genset). In Nigeria, where fuel scarcity does not give you appropriate notice before it starts, and a lot of adulterated diesel can easily make nonsense of your generator's functions, tell me...how reliable is this source of alternative power supply? shocked

As for solar power, the initial cost is rather high, and you need to replace the batteries at regular intervals. With the current unpredictable forex situation, you can be sure that cost of batteries would continue sky-rocketing for several months. With inverters, again cost of back-up batteries & spares come into play, and proper maintenance of the equipment. You also need regular power to ensure the batteries are fully charged. So if the Discos or your genset does not provide adequate power to charge your batteries over an appropriate length of time, bros' you are on your own. I know houses where their inverter systems are now like relics, because they have not been able to muster enough resources to change their battery bank. sad

My point? We have a poor maintenance culture, and the smart city thing is something that only the very rich can afford at this particular point in time. Even the middle-class that aspire to have a smart home, will find that there are too many interruptions to their efforts to have a seamless, continuous smart-home experience.

We are good at putting the cart before the horse in this nation. Let us fix the power issue as best as we can, then work on perfecting our maintenance culture, ensure the supply of quality parts and equipment, instil the best technical skills in our pool so we have an adequate pool of trained hands to fall back on.

Then and only then, will smart cities make sense. Just my 2 cents.. undecided

Hi

Just like a building blocks where you set one at a time until you get your desired outcome or
just like counting numerical numbers where you start from the smallest number walking your
way to the top. So also is Building automation also known as building internet of things, you
start from they low level to the complex structuring of your building.
Yes they is need for constant power supply, when it has to to with complex building automation.
like:
* In Airport
* Railway
* Retail chain management
* Hospitals
* Schools
* Tourism/Recreational centre
* Office Complex
* Road control system like traffic light and many more
Constant electricity will only become a major necessity in home automation when things like:
power,water,gas, and cctv camera are being automatize. As long as the staple in home remains
* Television
* Musical set
* Hvac
* Lighting
* Refrigerators
* Manual/self control gas cooker.
The normal power supply or alternative power can still work. making your home smart/intelligent at these level is less
expensive and requires less amount of energy.

To make your home automatize or if you will like to learn more on how they building internet of things works, feel free to
speak to a building automation facilitator, that will work you through they entire process ensuring that you achieve your
desired result.

Hi

When you're not home, little doubts can start to crowd your mind. Did I turn the Refrigeration on? Did I put the gas off? Are the kids doing their homework or watching television?
With a smart home, you could quiet all of these worries with a quick glance at your smartphone or tablet. You could connect the devices and appliances in your home so they can communicate with each other and with you.

They concept of smart/intelligent building takes things a step further by introducing centralized control. In the most advanced form of smart home, there's a computer that does what you normally do yourself: it constantly monitors the state of the home and switches appliances on and off accordingly. So, for example, it monitors light levels coming through the windows and automatically raises and lowers blinds or switches the lights on at dusk. Or it detects movements across the floor and responds appropriately: if it knows you're home, it switches light and music on in different rooms as you walk between them; if it knows you're out, it sounds an intruder alarm.

In designing a smart home, you can do as much or as little home automation as you want. For starters, it may be best to think of tasks you already routinely do and then find a way to automate them.
You could begin with a lighting starter kit and add on security devices later. If you want to start with a more expansive system with many features, it's a good idea to carefully design how the home will work, particularly if rewiring or renovation will be required.
