Save Lagos Group Lauds Lagos Assembly Over Call Banning Demolition Of Slums by sweetsandy4luv(f): 2:47pm On Nov 07, 2016
A civil society organization, Save Lagos Group has lauded members of the Lagos State House of Assembly over their call on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to halt further demolition of slums across riverine areas of the state.

In a statement issued by the Convener, Comrade Adeniyi A. Sulaiman and the Director, Media, Comrade Olaolu Oladipo and made available to NEWSFLASHNGR.COM, The Save Lagos Group urged the Assembly members to expand the resolution to cover other areas of the state.

Reacting to the call the duo specifically lauded the Speaker of the Assembly, Hon. Mudasiru Obasa, chairman of the ad hoc committee set up to look into the matters, Hon. Adefunmilayo Tejuosho and other members for taking the decision they consider as populist.

According to the Save Lagos Group, “We welcome the call, which is in line with the desire of our organization considering the prevailing economic reality in the country that prevents the vast majority of Nigerians from accessing decent shelter in their country.”

It added that the Assembly has lived up to its billing as the safeguard of the common man by taking the decision, saying it (the state House of Assembly) has rekindled the confidence of the people of the state that democracy has come to stay not only in the state but across the country.“Our group had in a statement recently called for caution on the part of the state government on the issue as we felt that it would not be in the best interest of the people who are supposed to be the primary responsibilities of those in government.”

While restating its believe that though, the state government owes it a duty to enforcement its laws relating to ensuring sanity in the town planning activities, the Save Lagos Group also used the opportunity to urge the state government to provide alternative arrangements for those to be affected by the planned mass demolition.

Imo, if you know you can't afford a decent shelter in lagos, then find your way to the village.
How can people be endangering their health and life by living in such conditions all in the name of living In the city?

Instead of calling to ban demolition of slums which we all know pose several health hazards, why not brainstorm on better ways forward in terms of relocation of these people who live in the slums?

That's like telling me to buy a phone for someone to be using after I recovered my stolen phone from them.

They know fully well its government property. Yet, they still went there and built their rubbish, collecting rent up to 100k from some people. Now government has destroyed it and you're asking the government to replace it for them

Slums are breeding grounds for crimes and many atrocities.
If they can't afford a decent life, let them go back to their villages.

They should destroy the slums and have those people relocate back to their states. If you do not have anything to add to where you have migrated to then go back to where you originated from and develop there instead.

No they will never do that, they prefer being jobless and staying in slums
and under bridges. Then they blame the government for lack of jobs forgetting
that it is people like them that farm in villages.

Perfect answer.

Imagine illegal landlords and landladies collecting N1000 - N2000 monthly rent for a room in Makoko slum without bathroom and without toilet.
They defecate in the environs and spread infectious diseases.

He has been.

These people are not entitled to the land that they occupy. Besides that they have a tendency to create unsafe housing.

If someone came and occupied your property would you not evict them? Why is this different?

I don't understand why the government cannot build affordable houses that the poor can live. Spacious One room apartments that can house a family of 5 worse comes to worst. Why can't we have housing projects as seen in developed countries. Anytime the govt builds housing schemes, it is high cost estates, unaffordable to the poor. BUILD projects then demolish the slums.

Is it because it's government property government is destroying there or because it's a slum and has no plan?

Family of five? What will someone that cannot raise a family of five in a good home be doing with a family of five?
